The Dual Dubbing of some Godzilla movies

With the popularity of the first few Godzilla films in the United States, Toho Studios of Japan began the practice of having the movies dubbed in Asia for overseas export. These versions are often called "international versions" by fans. Most US distributors would commission their own English dubs, and as such, many of these international version went unused in the US. By the time Japanese monster movies were losing popularity in the 1970s, US companies would release Toho's international versions with edits, only removing harsh language and moments of violence. With the exception of Godzilla 2000, every Godzilla film released in the United States after 1985 has been an international version commissioned by Toho.

Since the late 1990s, most of the original US versions have become replaced on home video by Toho's international versions. Kaiju films that have been released on DVD as international versions include AtragonGodzilla vs. The Sea MonsterSon of GodzillaDestroy All MonstersSpace Amoeba, and Godzilla vs. Hedorah. All of these films were originally released in the United States with dubbed versions created by Titra Studios (later Titan Productions).- Wikipedia

I’m not aware if any of the dvd releases include the dubbing of the movies done by Titra, as all of mine are the international versions so for anyone that didn’t get into Godzilla until after VHS you may not know of the dual dubbing a few of the Godzilla movies have. Usually these movies make cuts and alter the movie, however in terms of dialogue I haven’t noticed a huge difference between tohos dub and Titra’s outside the voice actors. In a few instances(Son of Godzilla, and Ebirah, Horror of the Deep) I personally prefer the dubbing done by Titra, not saying it’s a better versions as I said they usually alter cuts with opening scenes being  big target of change, but in terms of the dubbing alone I like the voice actors and their portrayals of the characters.

So for anyone who has seen the Titra versions of these movies and the toho dubs how did you feel Titra did in the dubbing alone? Were they able to come up with superior versions or do tohos stand above them in your opinion?

There is only one English dub for Monster Zero. There are different edits of the English language version, but no international version was recorded by Toho. They use the same Glen Glenn Sound dub from UPA.

I stand corrected. Stuart Galbraith said Toho prepped an international version that was only released theatrically in Great Britain. There was no theatrical or VHS release of this dub in North America.

Ok thx. The only reason I asked as it’s always confusing, and I hope nobody is offended but I got  a bootleg (from a friends friend) of Invasion recently and it is listed as International version. It’s red Menace reconstruction and apparently there is this one and a Monster Zero reconstruct.

The Red Menace stuff is very good work. They tend to find sources no one's seen or heard for decades--So I can't speak to what they accomplish. I can only remark on officially released stuff.

I was shocked to find this out firsthand as I watched Destroy All Monsters on DVD for the first time and the General cried; "Ready Fire!" instead of; "Raunch the Lockets!" as I had been waiting to hear. Of course I'm used to it now but quite a disappointment at first.

BTW, if you don't have any copy of Son of G, I'm pretty sure you can buy a digital release on VUDU for ten bucks, international dub of course.

Tokyo Shock released "Destroy All Monsters" in 2014 on DVD. They secretly included the Titra English dub on the disc. When Toho found out, they were royally pissed and took all those copies off retail/online stores.

You can find the Titra dubbed version of "Atragon" on YT but the video quality is SO bad, it's hard to watch.

"Frankenstein Conquers the World" was released as 2 DVD release: the American version and the Japanese version. There are some scenes missing and included which is weird. Even the ending is weird. Earthquake or giant octopus?

Jim in Seattle,
Toho actually okayed the Titra dub, it was the unauthorized use of all the production photos that pissed them off. Royalty laws work differently in Japan and Toho couldn't account for all of the crew members and actors in those photos.

It's also because Media Blasters did not wait for Toho's approval that the latter is so difficult to license special features from for North American releases. Basically, Media Blasters gave us one of the best releases possible for a Godzilla movie and, in doing so, made sure future releases were mediocre from then until eternity.
