Surely I wasn't the only one who was. I'm sure some of you were, just too scared to admit it.

Godkilla2000- Thank you! The movie did have it's moments, but to me it was an overall disappointment :(

When you say disappointed do you mean it was bad, or just didn't live up to your expectations while still being a decent movie?

The only slight disappointment I had was Godzillas connection to the plot. He seemed like he was mostly there to fight the MUTOS but not much besides that. I would've liked to know his backstory a little more, like did those nukes kill him or just another of his species? I'm seeing it for a second time today to see if I missed any small plot points.

Overall I wouldn't say I was VERY disappointed with it. I still loved it, and its definitly in my top 10 favorite Godzilla movies.

I could not be happier at how Godzilla was portrayed, while it is reasonable to say that we would had liked more of him, it’s the quality over quantity that counts.

This is a movie that clearly overestimates it's audience. It thought people wanted more than a bunch of lizards fighting, or stomping a city for no reason.

Chances are it won't live up to your expectations if you were expecting the perfect movie.

I believe a movie like this needs to be seen twice. The first time you watch it you have all of that hype, expectations, hopes, reviews, and spoilers in your brain. Once you see it for the first time all of that washes away, and you can finally see it without all of those psychological burdens.

It works for me. I didn't truly enjoy Pacific Rim or Avengers until I saw them the second time.

Durpoo4- A little bit of both

Duratok- Well for me, I usually take a few days to understand and form my own opinion on a movie, but I only do that because I can't do the same the first time. But in this situation, I have already made up my mind. But who knows? Maybe i'll come across a sudden epiphany for the next couple of days.

I posted a review in the Reviews section last night. I was a bit let down as well. I still liked the movie, but can't say I loved it. The sparseness of the monsters in "Monsters" may have worked for that movie, but in Godzilla it was maddeningly frustrating. When he's there, he's awesome. Problem is, he's just not there enough. I didn't care for cutting away at key moments, especially when you've waited so long. You have to make it count. This is the opportunity to redeem the character (in an American movie), and you have to seize it, and I think they let that opportunity get away. This movie had a pretty decent finale, but it needed a couple of big set pieces with Godzilla earlier as well. I hope it does well so we can get more, and if we do, maybe they can fix/tweak some of those shortcomings. BTW, I will go to see it again fairly soon.

Here is the problem with this Godzilla.  (don't read if you haven't seen there are spoilers)

#1. Godzilla, the Godzilla most of us know, loves to smash things. He is angry, and he doesn't go out of his way to avoid things. In 1954 he destroyed a city because it was there, not because he accidently bumped into something. He did the bumping.

The new Godzilla swims underneath boats and the military safely followed him around.

It was almost like one could expect National Geographic to be on board coming along for the ride investigating this unique animal swimming in the ocean.

#2. Godzilla was never really the focus of this movie, and he was not a force of nature.

There was this idea that he would 'bring balance to the force' oops sorry, wrong film, "balance to nature" but how did anyone know this? What reason was there to trust him?

Was he somehow the "chosen one?"

#3. Godzilla just seemed rather weak to me in this. He did. I am sorry to say, but he did. The way those two monsters were having their way with him and probably would have killed him if not for the death of the eggs was a bit much. He was groaning in pain too much for my tastes. The Mutos while interesting were really not the type of creatures who could do much damage to certain versions of Godzilla in the past.

#4. The human story was weak and not needed. Your ideal lead character was killed at the wrong time, and so was his wife. Those two should have carried this film. Godzilla should have been the threat that could also 'save the day'

#5. The teasing was ridiculous. This is not Jaws some shark on a beach. This is supposedly a force of nature. Something that could actually destroy the world. A real threat not somethign you swim with on the ocean waves as in the military riding along for hm.

You can only hide somethign like that for so long and the aiport should have been where the teasing ended.

The beginning of the movie was filled with so much promise and was done well. I wanted to see showdown between Godzilla and the military. At no time did the military really unload on him.

That is one of the great traditions of Godzilla and there is a metaphoric meaning behind it.

When Japan with all their spirit fought the United States they were overcome by technology. The bomb. So Godzilla was a reversal of this.

He was natures weapon that all modern warfare weapons failed against.

This Godzilla only destroyed things that sort of were in his way, but he didn't set out to do damage. He was kinda of a nice animal, but he certainly was not a "Monster"

@TALISMAN-Bravo! Couldn't have said it better myself :) You summed up every problem I had with the movie. The fact that he wasn't the brutal force of nature they made him out to be and instead some 'nice guy' really pissed me off! Your last quote is both beautiful and true! Godzilla was indeed natures weapon that all modern warfare weapons failed against. Instead, Gareth turned him in to docile minion of mankind.

Another problem I had with the movie was the atomic breath. I know they were doing a fan service by making it blue but lets be honest; it hardly matched the new design. The fluorescent blue was so out of contrast with black slate colour. But putting the colour aside, the breath it self looked very weak and feeble. When he was charging up the attack, I held my breath in anticipation for something awesome, but instead what I got was scrawny blue fire.

^The preference of what type of Godzilla people want compared to the how the movie was is quite interesting. It seems people wanted a certain Godzilla and didn't get that one. However, AggressiveKaiju, I do wonder what you have to compare it to since you've never actually seen any of the original films.

Im pretty sure all of us gfans here shouldve been disappointed in the movie....

we shouldve known why critics loved it so much..

But yes true, Godzilla was not the main focua in the movie, he was just thrown in there to try and make g fans happy while the movie was only suppose to be about the humans trying to stop the mutos....

This movie wouldve made more sense if it was called "Muto", due to the fact that it had nothing to do with Godzilla AT ALL.

Im highly disappointed.... very disappointed, I walked out of the IMAX theater with my head down and told myself "What did I just watch, well it wasnt really a Godzilla movie that's all I know."

Gareth, I trusted you to make the perfect Godzilla movie we've all been waiting for -.- not a movie that was about his enemy and humans only.....

"Gareth, I trusted you to make the perfect Godzilla movie we've all been waiting for"

Then I think you had already set yourself up for disappointment long before the movie was released.

Funny how the big complaint is all the focus on the MUTOs...

I was a good movie with a couple of great parts. I wanted it to be all great, but it just didn't make it. I like that Godzilla was the hero, but he should have been a bit more of the unlikely hero. They never really visualized him as a potential threat. Not that he had to destroy everything in his path, but heck, you may as well have slapped an "S" on his chest and given him a red cape. And the way Edwards teased wasn't fun, it was annoying. There should have been one substantial Godzilla scene in the middle of the film. Instead, they tear away from the airport scene right as its getting started. Frustrating! And I don't know, call me a softy, but the ending left me feeeling kinda sad in a way.
