The MonsterVerse needs to embrace a darker tone

Even though the MonsterVerse has been perfectly fine dealing with a light-hearted tone with Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla Vs. Kong, Warner Bros and Legendary have tried and failed to replicate the dark tone that was used in Godzilla (2014), with it's sequel Godzilla: King of The Monsters having HUGE tonal issues.  I think the MonsterVerse should continue on, but now as I'm currently doing a rewatch on HBO Max this week I realize that the MonsterVerse needs to embrace a dark tone.  Sure, I already said WB handled the light-hearted tone fine with KSI and GVK.  But if that tone continues it'll most likely be like GVK with it's over-used comedy at the worst times.  But I think the MonsterVerse needs to be darker, deeper, more emotional, and definitely more thought-provoking.  But not R-rated darkness.  It just needs to be that level of darkness and emotion present in films like Godzilla (1954), All Monsters Attack, and Shin Godzilla (2016).  The films also need to be longer in order to handle this tone better, as it applies to human characters and delving in the Titans.  Runtimes for future MonsterVerse movies need to be 2 hours and 30 minutes at the very least.  The maximum runtime I'd go up to is 3 hours and 20 minutes.  All of that is needed to make MonsterVerse movies more fleshed out.  The human character development would also benefit from a more somber tone and the development used in a fleshed out runtime could make future human characters in this series better to get behind.  Honestly, I don't think a light-hearted tone is going to work anymore and it's for the best.  Legendary needs to go back to what made so many of Toho's movies beloved among fans around the world.  The MonsterVerse needs a darker tone moving forward.

Dark does not equate better.

A darker movie, or more serious film, is usually dictated by the story itself. For example, you can make a lighthearted Batman movie--The 1966 Adam West Batman movie did it pretty well with its satire and comedic investment. (Say what you will about how campy and goofy it is, but it was also very comic accurate for the time.)

Now take The Dark Knight. The movie isn't dark for the sake of being dark and serious. It's dark because its story requires it. Its themes of anarchy, escalation and nihilism in a post-9/11 world would be rather difficult to pull off with the tone of the 1966 Batman.

I'm less concerned about the tone of these films, and more concerned with how well said tones fit the stories. As long as said stories work, the tone should as well.

And if you feel the tone isn't always working, ala, comedic beats, that should help inform you about the quality of the story.

I agree with GH (Gman), what he says about Batman is a very good example.

I don’t think that justifies an R rating. The material would get  one but would it be a good movie? Gojira isn’t R and has done the best job.

Godzilla and Kong appeal a lot to children, they make up a big part of the audience for these films.

As cool as an R-rated Godzilla or Kong movie would be, I feel like it would end up alienating a huge part of it's audience, which could, unfortunatly, cause the film to not perform that well.

Also I do not like the idea of saying that movies that aren’t R rated are censored. Neither I like the Idea of saying R is what makes a film good or fully realizes the artistic part of the film. Most R rated films are that because they tend to indulge themselves and use questionable things to draw in an audience. Honestly, I think a practice of restraint is healthy.

I really liked the tone that Godzilla 2014 gave us, even if the story was a little simple. I also feel that Bryan Cranstons character in that movie gave better "investigation" scenes than what was shown in GvK. Team Godzilla could've easily still figured out what was going on even if they were captured early. They would've likely been brought in the CEO's(i forget his name) office so he could explain his evil plan(without revealing MechaG, just hinting at it) and later being broken out indirectly by MechaG, which would've been the big reveal.

Nope. Instead they just had a light hearted adventure throughout the facility and completely took away any of the potential mystery and revealed Mechagodzilla way earlier on than needed.

Maybe we'll get a Destroy All Monsters type movie in the monsterverse that brings back that serious tone.
