MonsterVerse Monsters: Who do you want?

I love Zilla as well, although Godzilla 1998 unfortunately was made to cashgrab Jurassic Park craze of the 90's, I think Zilla should be forgiven and given a second chance on the big screen. 

Top 5: Destroyah, Biollante, Anguirus, MechaKingGhidorah, MechaGodzilla

This is less about what I want to see and more about why Mike Dougherty was the right man to direct this (albeit it at the wrong time, but then again, timing is everything isn't it?). It also does play with the theme/question posed here. I think G.H. (Gman) will find this interesting, if he hasn't already seen it. The following was a snippet I saw posted in the Boston Herald:

“The film firmly establishes that Ghidorah can regenerate. That DNA is not of this world, which means that the possibilities are endless,” said Dougherty. “I think that’s why (Jonah) definitely has a little glimmer in his eyes. Because he sees all the potential uses, whether it be the whole head itself or even just a small sample of the DNA.”

There is definitely a whole world of possibilities, especially if a mad scientist were to get a hold of some of that monster DNA. But that’s not all.

“We also see a swarm of flies that are feasting on the head,” points out Dougherty. “So how is that going to affect the insects that are eating its flesh?”

The filmmaker also didn’t discourage hopes of seeing Mecha-King Ghidorah — the man-made robotic Ghidorah seen in 1991’s “Godzilla vs King Ghidorah.”

“That’s the fun of Godzilla movies,” Dougherty said. “While they have one foot (closer to) our existing world in sort of a grounded science fiction reality, they aren’t afraid to just go for it, get weird, and embrace this bizarre science fantasy logic. Let’s have a mechanical Godzilla. Let’s give Ghidorah a mechanical robot head. Why not?”

Dougherty, of course, did not guarantee that any of these theories are actual plans for the future.

“I’m not saying that any of these things are definite setups. But you don’t have to think about it very much for very long to sort of dream up a long list of possible ways to go with a severed head of a space dragon,” he said.

Anguirus should be the next one. It makes so much sense, yet they never added him.

Think again. Emmerich and Devlin were not fans of the material and didn't want to do it when they were offered the job.

Toho executives didn't like the design either and only gave the movie a green light because they were afraid it was their last chance to break in to the international market--Which ended up being a mistake on their part since the movie made it impossible to license Godzilla merchandise overseas for the next 5 years. Godzilla was considered poison by western markets since so much of the 1998 merchandise didn't move and sat on shelves collecting dust.

I'm glad you enjoy the monster and that the movie got you in to the franchise proper, but it still weakened the franchise to a point where even Toho couldn't save it in Japan. There's literally no reason to bring the creature itself back to the screen and the only reason Toho keeps licensing it out to overseas comics is because it's an opportunity to make extra pocket change off the character. Fans of GINO, or Zilla, are a niche group in an already niche fandom. It would only be pleasing a fraction of a fraction of a fraction--Which isn't financially worth it.

I have in fact seen that. I didn't put too much stock in it, but you're right. It sets up an entire galaxy of possibilities.

@Gman - I don't put much stock in it either, because unfortunately, I think the Monsterverse ends next year, unless some miracle happens. It's just interesting to see how much of a fan he is and how much he loves that world/genre.

Bingo. I don't think it will continue either. Though there is no denying Dougherty really fanboys out over the series.

Gman, I honestly think your overthinking the zilla inclusion. A minor appearance in the monsterverse isn’t going to shut it down. I’m not, or any other zilla fan for that matter, is asking for a zilla solo film or comic. We just him to be in it as a minor titan. An appearance in a comic or a movie should be fine and dandy and not cause an uproar with Godzilla fans. Well, the mature ones at least.  There will always be a zilla hater that talks trash but what can they do? I’m pretty sure Toho would happily give legendary zilla for cheap. Also, this topic is about what monster people want in the monsterverse, I want zilla and that’s that. Don’t care what people say.

The idea of Mechagodzilla is kind of growing on me... If portrayed as an Alien construct like it was back in the 70's. But Mechaghidorah makes no sense in the monsterverse since King Ghidorah can regenerate a new completely organic body.

I would have to say Mechagodzilla. I am not gonna repeat myself on how and why because I have made multiple topics and comments on the subject, but I simply want to have the full Toho big 5 in the Monsterverse at some point.

Warner Bros has acquired the rights for Mechagodzilla in recent years, maybe one more time would be that much of a problem for them.
