Is it shamful of me to say that I find the 1998 G film more entertaining then G2014?

It's only shameful if you consider the film to be a better representation of Godzilla. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the fact is that the 1998 monster isn't Godzilla. 2014 is by far a more faithful representation of Godzilla, but some people enjoyed the 1998 movie more than the new one. Personally I think 1998 is a very bad movie yet it is still at times entertaining and fun to watch and that 2014 is overall a good movie and an excellent representation of Godzilla.

I just don't get it. I can't really enjoy the '98 film at all. It's such a typical, 90s blockbuster cliche that I derive cynicism from it more than enjoyment. The first third is okay, but once the setting moves to New York I lose all interest.

The 2014 film has faults and some fairly uninteresting leads, but I like how its structure defies typical blockbuster norms. I think its that directorial decision that keeps me engaged over the 98 film which I largely just consider trash.

But people also enjoy Transformers. To each their own I guess...

But just to warn you, millions, heck, Billions disagree with you. Majority of fans think of 98 as trash, filth, udder scum created from the waste of nothing, im one of those fans.

 If you consider, the 1998 Gino incarnation as even a spec as good as 2014's.....You sir, have lost all credibiliity.

KAIJUJIRA - There's absolutely nothing wrong with you enjoying that film! If that's your cup of tea, then enjoy it with whatever biscuits you like! That's the beauty of being a free thinking autonomous being: you're free to take enjoyment from whatever you please! :)

In my opinion, the only redeeming factor of 1998 is Zilla himself, who looks and acts pretty cool, just not at all like Godzilla in any way. The acting is mostly atrocious, the script is full of cliches, and too many scenes are inexplicably ripped straight from Jurassic Park. Zilla may be a cool monster, but the fact that the film was called Godzilla and tried to pass him off as the true Godzilla is unforgivable and a major strike against the film.

The new movie's script is flawed, the monster scenes are arguably too brief, and the acting isn't stellar across the board, but it's hard to argue that 1998 is on par with it on any level. The new movie is just superior in every way except debatably its ability to keep the viewer stimulated in the majority of scenes. 

I enjoy the 98 movie. I think the first act is very well done and doesn't get the credit it deserves since people like to focus on the negatives of the other acts. Anyway both movies cater to a different audience if you prefer action then the 98 movie is for you, if you want an american version of Godzilla I'd go with the 2014 version.

well it had it zilla doing more things than godzilla did in 2014. thats only credit i give the movie

Uh, no...? What kind of answer were you expecting? Death threats? Anyone that gives a crap about the franchise of a fictional character that much should be taken to a mental asylum and it's your opinion, the only logical answer would be no.

I'm not sure that's an accurate assessment. Are you saying we see GINO do more things than Godzilla in 2014? Or that GINO actually had more to do in the 98 film than Godzilla in the 14 film?

Short answer, no. It’s your opinion and I respect that. There are a lot of people for whom ’98 is more entertaining. I’m not going to call you out on it, say you’re not a true G-Fan, or anything dumb like that. I’m not a fan of that movie, but I can certainly see your point.

Having said that, I liked, but didn’t love the new one. My criticisms of it are well documented on these boards. Godzilla actually looked and acted (for the most part), like the Godzilla we know. For all the talk of Edwards doing unconventional things for a blockbuster, and his creative, bold decisions, etc., etc., at the end of the day this movie was an exercise in frustration for me. Great buildup to his reveal at the airport, but once you show him, unleash the beast! We want to see Godzilla! It’s been a four year wait, and ten years since we last saw him, period.

What really boggles the mind is that American studios have now had two stabs at making Godzilla, spent almost $300 mil combined (not adjusting for inflation and possibly marketing costs), and still haven’t gotten it quite right. How many movies do you suppose ToHo could make for that money? We’d have one every 1-2 years! Traditional, and old school perhaps, but probably entertaining nonetheless.

Both movies are missed opportunities for very different reasons, IMHO. One director doesn’t mind showing the character, but makes him completely unrecognizable, and throws out everything cool and unique about him, and the other pretty much nails him, but is coy about showing him off!

^Why Thank You! Some have not agreed with my assessments of the new movie, and that's OK. It's just an opinion, and it's not going to change the world. I wanted to love it, but I just don't agree with some of Edwards' creative decisions. I still bought the movie on Blu-ray, so I obviously didn't hate it.

At the end of the day, ToHo saw dollar signs and approved what Emmerich et al were going to do, so you can blame them just as much. ToHo could have just said "No", but they thought their cash cow would get away.

Take this from someone who HATES everything about the 98 film and its monster;

There is nothing wrong with liking or preffering it over the 2014 movie. Go ahead, i cant and wont stop you. I personnaly find it boring, but thats my opinion and i would never force it on you. I loved the 2014 movie, im glad im getting a sequel, so i have nothing too complain about.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: GINO 98 is a bad movie, not just a bad Godzilla movie, but a bad movie, period. The acting is atrocious (some of the worst I've ever seen in my life, but that's par for the course, seeing how this is a RE film), there's plot holes so massive you could literally fly a plane through them (you mean to tell me a giant 200 foot tall iguana is able to romp through a city of 8 million people and not one person noticed where the hell he went? And that's just the tip of the iceberg), the action scenes really aren't all that appealing, and not nearly entertaining enough to offset the film's flaws (and boy was it ever flawed), he just constantly runs away from stuff, and the characters are all utterly annoying. Say what you want to about the characters in this movie, at least they weren't actively annoying like the ones in the 98 film.

And at least Ford Brody had a rhyme and reason to be where he was in this even if he wasn't all that interesting of a lead, Ferris Bueller is a wormy scientist called in to study a giant mutant iguana, too dumb to realize he's standing in a giant footprint... yeah, try and wrap your head around that.

But hey, to each his own. 

maybe i should hace said it better. we actually see zilla do things while in 14 godzilla does quite a bit but they cut away from it
