IIRC, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, like Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, started out as a new King Kong movie (hence, Godzilla gaining new powers from lightning), so Mechagodzilla probably was an upgraded Mechani-Kong in the original script. That might be completely incorrect though, so don't quote me on that.
