DAIMAJIN

I typed Daimajin in the forum search and found absolutely nothing. How can this be? now to put it bluntly, the closer we get to the 2014 release I get increasingly tired of the forums' near endless speculations of the same subjects over and over again so I thought I'd go old school. I'm just here to say if you haven't given the Daimajin trilogy a go it may help hold you over for awhile before May 16th.

It's referred to as a kaiju series but its pretty far removed from anything Godzilla/Gamera.Daimajin takes place in feudal Japan and more or less is a statue that embodies an angry god who when summoned will vanquish evil . . .and those who summoned him if the mood may strike. In all 3 films Daimajin only shows up for the final 15 minutes and instead of being this ridiculous sized monstrousity he's really about 20 feet tall but that works well here, allowing the minature work to be more detailed.

Look up the trilogy on blu-ray and if you have Amazon Prime you can watch two of the films for free.

I agree with you 500% and thank you. So, so much.

The trilogy is really awesome I agree. They're Daiei's best early work in the genre easily and the movies mop the floor with the Showa Gamera titles. Interesting that Ifukube decided to do the music for these.

Have you seen the recent television series?

Oh jeesh, I saw a trailer for it and cringed. Dark/serious feudal Japan films about oppression turned into upbeat , modern power rangers style crap. Blahhhh.

Loved the music, obvious Ifukube wasn't contracted to any studio but for some reason it really surprised me that he did the score for Toho's rival.

I love the trilogy. Daimajin in general is just such an awesome character/monster/being. And i also have the revoltech figure of him (I highly recommend it). My favorite will always be the first one!

I hate the T.V show though. It ruins the serious and ominous mood of the original Daimajin movies.

Excelent topic!  The Daimajin films are beyond epic!  I descovered them several years ago, and finally saw them when Mill Creek released their Blu-ray set.  They are now three of my favorite films of all time.  The first one in particular was so powerful and somber, very Gojira-like in many ways.  An unusual choice for 1966, the year that gave us the lighthearted Godzilla vs The Sea Monster.  In an age when the kaiju eiga were becoming more family friendly and fun, the Daimajin films returned the genre to its dark roots.  The brillience of the films really comes through when you look at all of their great aspects-the stories, the cinematography, the acting, and Akira Ifukube's haunting and georgous score-and realize that all three movies were produced IN THE SAME YEAR!  Simply amazing.

Long story short, if you are a kaiju fan and have not seen the Daimajin Trilogy, stop reading this, buy the super cheap trilogy set on Blu-ray, and watch them!

Yes, they are that good.

What are you waiting for? :)

Gotta admit, I really enjoyed the television series. Yes it's in a very televised toku style, but it's actually well done and keeps true to the Daimajin movies-- the whole series is one long buildup to re-awakening Daimajin. It's different, but not bad.

Ah! Now that's a series I've not thought of in a while! Absolutely spectacular! I think I'll just dust them off and have a watch...

Yes I have seen the daimajin films many times and still like to watch them now and then.

The 3 movies are all very good. Got them on blu ray. Can't wait for the gamera show movies on blu ray!
