Hello everyone! Besides three headed alien dragons along with other monsters, and a fictional weapon(Oxygen Destroyer), what can kill Godzilla? Yeah yeah I know, he's a fictional character, but this makes for good discussion. Plus, I really don't know. Im sure you all can tell me. Now in regards to the new movie, Godzilla will represent(Said by Gareth Edwards) the Force of Nature and or the Hand of God.
Realistically, nature can never be completely stopped. So is Godzilla arguably unstoppable? I've heard that a nuke can kill him. If so, that is rather..strange. Then again, what created you can destroy you I guess. So if a nuke can kill him, why hasn't it been used? lol I want to believe in my mind that Godzilla is superior to the monsters in Pacific Rim, as well as those in his own universe. The Pacifc Rim kaiju(Although created by aliens) were just giant beasts with tough skin. Godzilla is an atomic creature, fully composed of extreme radiation. If he were to be killed in the new movie, or the older ones with the acception of the first movie and "Godzilla vs Destoroyah", what is something we actually have that is capable of killing him? Would it be a nuke? Educate me! lol

hitting his second brain would kill him

Show him GINO, that would give him a heart attack...lol.

But seriously, there is two things that can kill him; Another monster (IT HASNT HAPPEND, BUT KEIZER GHIDORAH OR DESTOROYAH COULD MAYBE DO IT) and the oxygen destroyer. Nothing more, nothing less. Atleast from what i remember.

ten things that (maybe) can kill Godzilla:

1. The Oxygen destroyer.

2. Superman.

3. Goku.

4. A giant meteor, bigger than the one that kill dinosaurs.

5. The sun becoming a Red Giant, destroying the earth and everything on it.

6. A virus.

7. Killing itself.

8. The Tsar Bomba.

9. Another god/monster (Cthulhu, Zeus, Chernabog, Trigon, Galactus)

10. Sick.

@KINGOFZOMBIES Fictional characters from other universes cannot be official way to kill Godzilla ever for 1 critical reason, they're all fictional characters. Rules don't exist that would justify Superman or Goku or Cthulhu being an obvious answer (to be honest we can't even say the Tsar Bomb or a meteor would kill him with that thought in mind). What I mean by that is if one day I make an official Toho Godzilla movie that has Godzilla destroy planets and survive nukes, than fans everywhere would always refer to my movie whenever they argue on the internet about Godzilla's durability. Writers are the only real things that can kill fictional characters.

You could say Goku can kill Godzilla, but I could say Godzilla would kill Goku; we would both be right because neither of these characters exist. So other than what the Godzilla canon has officially stated can kill Godzilla, which limits to the Oxygen Destroyer and his second brain (but that didn't even work), you can't really say WHAT can kill Godzilla. One of the many annoying trends of fiction.

MemberMothra LarvaeDec-01-2013 9:04 PM

Also Godzilla has survived a nuke in the comics and a meteor-to-the-face in Final Wars. So I don't even think those can kill him. Let's face it, Godzilla's durability and overall statistics are screwed up to the point where we really can’t answer this question. If you want Godzilla to be unstoppable, then the guy is unstoppable.

Instinctive Gigan, long time no see. Are the comics held as canon? I'm honestly unsure. Also, Godzilla's just as much fiction as the things you claimed were fiction. lol

Also, Cadnium shells came close to killing Godzilla until Godzilla was revived by the electrical storm produced by an atmospheric nuclear explosion. Nukes haven't been officially used on Godzilla in the movies. I guess his strengths and weaknesses depend on the movie you're watching. In Final Wars, the only real threat to Godzilla was the energy vampire known as Keizer Ghidorah. In the Heisei series, Godzilla is almost killed by Cadmium shells, the destruction of his second brain, and Destoroyah (arguably). In the showa series (all of which claim to be the direct sequel to the 54 movie, with maybe one or two exceptions, Godzilla is seen as almost being killed by plenty of other monsters. 1954, Godzilla is killed by the fictional weapon known as the oxygen destroyer.

BCROCKETT My man, my main meng! Glad to see you back! I personally believe canon is whatever you want it to be; for example I refuse to call the nowaday Spider-man comics and the Star Wars prequels canon since I hate them so much. I personally find the comics more canon than the movies of Godzilla since I fail to see a slow moving Godzilla being able to do much and be claimed King of the Monsters. I dunno, see that's why it's so tough to argue fiction, we're essentially arguing about thin air.

BCrockett94

MemberMothra LarvaeDec-01-2013 10:11 PM

Canon isn't really what we want it to be. Canon is what happened in that franchise's official universe. lmao. As much as I dislike the prequels to Star Wars, that was all canon. Jar Jar Binks is real.. Unfortunately.

But yeah, I agree with the "arguing over thin air" comment. xD It's very true, and it does make it harder to sound intelligent when making one's arguements.

Well I guess I try to base this off my understanding. It is easier for me to use the new Godzilla, since he will be presented as probably the most realistic Godzilla since the original. Giant black lizard, around 400ft, who is composed of atomic energy. Meaning his whole molecular structure is much different. The cells of his body and skin are all pumped of radiation and he feeds off of it. This must mean that his cells are mutated and most likey larger, more packed and dense than that of any other creatures. This is probably why he can withstand so much missle impact without it piercing his scales. Ok, then he is able to focus some of his atomic composition and release it as a defense, like a skunk or an eel. Except, it's all  radiated energy. So something extremely large, extremely durable, has a mobile "Ray gun" and absorbs radiation. What can take that down? lol

We don't really know anything about this new Godzilla. ;-;

True^ It is just my guess since Gareth is taking this in a more serious than fantastic approach lol

InstinctiveGigan

MemberMothra LarvaeDec-01-2013 10:40 PM

I know canon is essentially the "official" universe but if it's something that creates massive plot holes like the Star Wars prequels, then the writers have essentially done no better than someone on the internet with some shitty fan fic.  But ya see what I'm talking about? Arguing about fiction is hard to do considering the canon stuff can have holes, everyone can have their own favorite version of a specific piece of fiction (Heisei and/or Showa Godzilla for example), and considering all writers who have the power to create canon are no different than us as internet users it's hard to say a specific piece of work is legit (for example if one of us creates a Godzilla movie in the future, we've essentially have the power of canon in our hands even though now all we can do is enjoy as an audience). This is why I love treasured sagas like Breaking Bad and Harry Potter so much, you worry less about what is considered arguable and/or realistic and just enjoy the ride and the pure written brilliance. Godzilla movies are far from that, one of the main reasons I can't wait for this new one.

InstinctiveGigan

MemberMothra LarvaeDec-01-2013 10:40 PM

Godzilla is probably the most impossible to discuss canon since there are so many versions of him. It's kind of like, take your pick. I personally love Final Wars and GMK Godzilla the most since these depict what an actual "King of the Monsters" is like with power and skill to outmatch all. This new movie coming up will give us a whole new Godzilla, I wouldn't mind this new franchise to be the new canon of Godzilla.

In my opinion, n pretty muCh nothing. Nuke, nope, he will survive and heal. Well, okay, oxygen destroyer and other monsters could kill him, but nothing real. (haha, I'm comparing Godzilla to something real)

I'm not sure anything can kill Godzilla (except the oxygen destroyer which desintedgrated him. And Destoroyah basicly IS the oxygen destroyer so there's that too). Even in in GMK when his heart was completly separated from his body and sitting at the bottom of Tokyo bay, it started pumping again. So the list of ways to kill the monster king is very small.

Drilling a hole into his shoulder kills Godzilla according to GMK. Antinuclear Bacteria got pretty close, making him go into hibernation for yearsbelieve.

Then there's always the debatable topic of a nuke.

@DURP004 Um, are you kidding? GMK is the one best movie to support the whole idea of Godzilla being nearly unkillable, and you say he dies from getting a little hole drilled in his shoulder? Don't you remember his heart still beating on the ocean floor after he exploded? Speaking of which, even if he didn't actually survive and the heart stopped beating right after it cut to black, or it just never regenerated into a new body (in which case, that whole scene would have been pointless), it wouldn't be the hole that killed him ( he seemed unaffected by it other than feeling some pain), but the fact that he tried to unleash the power of a hydrogen bomb from his mouth when he had a hole in his throat, which... didn't exactly go well for him.

Since EVERY Godzilla in has shown they will use their ray without moderation it's fair to say any wound to the shoulder would end of killing them eventually.

A heart beating doesnt really mean much. That Godzilla wasn't the same as the others, different backstory and everything so to assume he had regenerator G1 is a stretch, but even so it would take months, maybe years to regenerate a whole body around the heart, since the brain which I would guess was telling the body to heal was gone, so while the heart may still function doesn't mean Godzilla could come back.

AdminGodzillaDec-03-2013 3:12 AM

...or some people just take the heart thing too literally and have no concept of thematic symbolism. But hey, I guess everyone feels like they need an explaination for everything.

And just to be clear Godzilla's powers are not the same across the board. Regenerator G-1 was what his G-Cells were called in Godzilla 2000 and that concept is heavily borrowed from the G-Cells in the Heisei series.

Godzilla was never known to have super regenerative abilities in the Showa series, he was simply tough. (Which I like better anyway.) It might be safe to assume that the Godzilla in the Kiryu movies also does not have the same super regenerative abilities. He returned in the second movie with an ugly scar on his chest. Even the GMK Godzilla didn't heal from the wound on his shoulder caused by King Ghidorah-- which was the only reason General Tachibana was able to drill out of his body.

Super regenerative powers are more of an exception than a rule with Godzilla. I wouldn't apply it to every incarnation.

Okay, so if showing his still beating heart didn't mean he's going to come back, what does it mean? And if he can't regenerate, how did he come back from being supposedly dissolved by the Oxygen Destroyer if he didn't grow back from a few surviving cells? I'm pretty sure GMK Godzilla just has very slow regeneration, so that he can be defeated for a while, but he will always come back.

I also recall Showa Godzilla recovering from some pretty nasty wounds, including having his hand skeletonized, in just a few minutes.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaDec-24-2013 4:47 PM

@Linkzilla

The beating heart means Godzilla will never die-- Period. It doesn't mean he'll regenerate. It doesn't insinuate anything about G-Cells, regenerative powers, growing an entire body back from nothing...etc... It's simply a visual metaphore that as long as conflict in humanity remains, so will he. It was an artistic decision, nothing more.

Besides we don't know how Godzilla returned in GMK and we're not supposed to. No character in the movie tries to understand or explain it and there's nothing to assume he grew back from simple cells in it. He simply exists and we don't know how. That's the point. The mystery of Godzilla is part of the horror and the enigma behind the creature.

Even in the original movie they only had theroies instead of absolute answers. This was done on purpose, in both movies, to leave the mystical nature of Godzilla ambiguous. Giving him an absolute explaination takes that mystery away from Godzilla-- as a character.

And yes the Showa Godzilla did recover from nasty wounds, like any animal would. That doesn't mean he has regenerative powers. Godzilla's skelo-hand in vs. Hedorah didn't heal immediately and neither did his eye. Remember, the Showa movies are only loosely connected. They never bothered to try and connect them too closely so the filmmakers probably never thought about how his wounds healed from movie-to-movie. The idea of regenerative powers wasn't brought up until screenwriter Kazuki Omori entered the Heisei seres.

The only thing I can think of offhand is asphyxiation...

I previously expressed doubts about the oxygen destroyer appearing in this new film; however...

If it's portrayed as something that suffocates (literally removing oxygen), I can see that being deadly to the Big G...

This is assuming the creature actually breathes oxygen!

I think for the sake of dramatic tension (let's assume the new film is following a similar plot to the original 1954 movie), whatever devise Dr. Serizawa develops to that can stop Godzilla and the mutos should be dangerous to everything on Earth. I don't expect the Oxygen Destroyer to re-appear, but perhaps some kind of virus or nanomite is created that has a chance of getting out of control when used. Will help keep the tone of hopelessness in this new film or series of films. It'd be a cool set-up for a sequel if the weapon did get out of control.

Godzilla is a living creature, and as such he can be killed by many things. Some of them are what you'd expect, others are not.

He could be killed by any monster capable of inflicting grievous wounds and preventing him from finding a safe place to recover. If he bleeds out, he's done.

He could be killed by an object striking him in a vulnerable place such as the base of the skull or the throat right beneath his jaw. He might be a kaiju, but he's got skeletal weaknesses and muscular vulnerabilities all the same.

He could be killed by anything that starves his lungs of oxygen, as we all know he requires oxygen to breath when out of water. Beneath the water, whatever kind of breathing aparatus he has (likely internal gills) needs to be cut off to drown him.

He could be killed by a large enough meteor striking him directly due to the pure speed and mass of the object. He's tough, but not touch enough to wether such an impact. And for those who think the Monster X meteor hit Godzilla, it didn't. It blew up before hitting the ground, and Godzilla whethered the explosion, not a direct impact.

He could be killed by nutrient starvation, keeping him away from any and all sources of sustinence such as radiation or any other kind of food intake he is capable of using.

He could be killed by (as stated by someone else above) the sun enlarging and absorbing the Earth and thus destroying it.

There are more, but this is where I'll stop the list for now.

Except, as I mentioned before, Regenerator G1 and G-Cells are only a confirmed power of the G2K and Heisei Godzilla's respectively.

Some fans really need a reality check with the whole, "he can't physically die," thing.
