It varies from film to film and country to country.

For example, Godzilla vs. Biollante is merely known as Godzilla 2 in Mexico. (Or Spain... I can't remember.) And some go way off the deep end.

The German titles for some Godzilla movies aren't reflective of the movies in any form:

Frankenstein's Monsters Battle against Ghidorah (Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster)
Frankenstein and the Monsters from the Ocean (Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster)
Frankenstein's Monsters Hunt Godzilla's Son (Son of Godzilla)
Frankenstein and the Monsters from Space (Destroy All Monsters)
Frankenstein's Battle against the Devil Monsters (Godzilla vs. Hedorah)
Frankenstein's Hellbrood (Godzilla vs. Gigan)
King Kong: Demons from Outer Space (Godzilla vs. Megalon)
King Kong against Godzilla (Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla)
The Brood of the Devil (Terror of MechaGodzilla)

Yeah, that's weird that they start with "Frankenstein"

One of my personal favorites:

The Italian poster for Mothra vs Godzilla.

(It seems they didn't actually watch the movie...)

It looks like a giant robot squid.

I found a spanish title for Godzilla Vs Hedorah, Godzilla against Hedorah: The toxic space bubble.

A german title for Godzilla vs Megalon, King Kong: Demons from Outer Space

And a spanish title for the same movie, Gorgo and Superman Meet in Tokyo.

Its interesting when other countries choose different monsters for the titles

Another title for GMK (2001) in mexico is The Invasion of Godzilla

I’ve been doing some research and it seems the Tawainese Titles Include Dinosaur, as a replacement for Godzilla. In fact Godzilla vs Biollante is called Big Dinosaurs

I think the way Taiwan uses "dinosaur" and Germany uses "Frankenstein" & "King Kong" are the same. In those respective countries, the words stand in for "monster" and are popular selling points. What seems bizarre, misleading and almost like a copyright lawsuit to us, must be more accepted and understood in those countries.

That makes sense, I have noticed these trends have stopped around the millennium era.
