The Bamboo forests of Japan have been overcome with a strange new type of foliage. Large vines that have almost completely taken over the forests of Japan, which seem to be incapable of being cut and even difficult to burn down. What is most strange are the large number of pumpkins that appear over night. Though harmless at first sight, some people claim that these vines and pumpkins are… ALIVE?! The first case was at the start of September when they first appeared. It happened after the strange smog clouds started to form over Saitama from the very sewers. The black clouds poured green rain onto nearby farms and forest areas for nearly 3 days. No one dared step outside while it rained or until the green water had dried up. But only a day later, the strange vines started to appear and spread with the dreaded pumpkins attached them. People started to take the pumpkins as treats, but the next day their houses would be overrun with pumpkin vines stretched all over the walls and ceilings with little trace of the families or individuals. But… the pumpkins had changed into oddly shaped jack-o-lanterns with eerily similar faces.
The JSDF was once again called in. They were not surprised but they were afraid. Many of their comrades and friends had already been lost to the other creatures and monsters that had come out of nowhere. But surely this would be of no hard challenge. They were to go deep into the forest of vines which were slowly taking over the Fukuoka area, and they were doing it at day time where they believed they would have the least to fear. The solders trenched through what felt like miles of forest, burning or squashing every pumpkin or large cluster of vines they came across. One soldier, Lieutenant Seito, was leading the group. He was staying vigilant as this was his first major operation and he didn’t want to mess it up. People more highly ranked then him had died in the recent months passed during more dangerous missions. He was determined to get himself and everyone out alive. His watch hit noon time and everything had been going well thus far, they would reach the center of these vines in another hours time, but just as they continued forward the vines started to move. They slithered and rose up like serpents out on the hunt slowly starting to engulf the ground the soilders stood on.
“Burn them, aim for the ground” Lieutenant Seito yelled, as he aimed his own flamethrower towards the canopy. The vines whipped and lashed out like wild whips at each soldier, seemingly trying to push them back, when they suddenly realized that some of the vines were rapping around their feet, while others were gathering behind them. One by one the soldiers were lifted up into the canopy tops, while others were dragged away into the darkness. Lieutenant Seito ordered everyone to regroup to him, and they did as swiftly as they could. Suddenly, the pumpkins they had been burning reappeared on the vines attacking them, only now they had horrifyingly gruesome faces like jack-o-lanterns, with large maws with sharp teeth. The maws lashed out now, grabbing the soldiers one by one, flinging the ones they caught like ragdolls or swallowing the others. The soldiers made a circle formation to guard themselves and tried to move forward but they were running low on fuel for their weapons. The canopy started to close in on them locking the light of the sun from out of their sight. It became clear to everyone that they had picked the wrong time to strike, as highness of the sun was allowing these plants to grow and move faster. It was dark now, and lieutenant Seito could only hear the screams of his soldiers being killed and devoured by the jack-o-lanterns. He moved to the sound of their screams, firing his flamethrower with what little fuel he had left trying desperately to save even some of his men. He eventually walked into a clearing, where the vines made a sort of barrier in all directions, but in the middle was a single large tree trunk-like stem, with what looked like what he could only describe as a giant jack-o-lantern. The maw of it looked large enough to swallow half of a building, and the inside of the maw seemed to glow bright enough to light the clearing with enough light that the Seito could see the faces of all his soldiers rapped in the vines, their faces swelling and turning orange and lumpy like pumpkins themselves. Seito raised his flamethrower toward the creature’s body as it stared down at him, like it was curious to his attempt. “You like the light? How about I light you up! He screamed.
He pulled the trigger with all his might, but there was no response from the weapon. He pulled the trigger repeatedly, but no flames shot out. It was then that he realized that his flame thrower was out of fuel. The creature gave a large deep breath inward so much that its own body started to expand. Seito could see what looked like fire brewing in a large fleshy growth in the center of the creature’s body and fire it was. He turned back up toward the creature’s maw just in time to see the large blast of fire spew from it. He soon felt nothing, as his chard body lay lifeless on the vine ground… the pumpkin vines slowly engulfing it.
The eve of Halloween is approaching kiddies and what kind of night would it be without the torch of good jack-o-lantern to guide one’s way to their destination… though it may be their last. HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA!!!
Enjoy the story and your Halloween night, whatever may come whether it be treats or fright. Post a comment and sleep tight!
