There is something flying high in the night skies of Japan. No one knows what it is, where it goes, or where it came from. All anyone knows is that for the past few week’s people have reported strange sightings in the sky at night. Though the sightings have been widespread across all of Japan, the details have all been similar. The moon shines brightly overhead as the night air grows colder and colder. The wind starts to pick up, slowly at first, but then it surges like the wind from a tornado or a hurricane. Weather and local new reports in the affected area however confirm that no abnormal weather phenomenon were present, though strong sudden wind currents were recorded.
What really has everyone spooked are the strange disappearances around the areas such strong winds are found. People all report the same thing; chilling cold air, strong winds, but most recently a fast moving shadow that soars across the ground. The shadow itself is seems to move so fast that it seems faded, not completely dark like a normal shadow. But those who are caught in the shadow disappear as quickly as the shadow itself. In response the military has decided to act.
Japan Air Self-Defense Pilot Hikitashi had just gotten the call. The radar scans had picked up faint trances of an unidentified flying object. The radar scans showed the object seemingly appearing and disappearing on the radar itself, leading military officials to believe the object to be a superfast stealth spy-plane. Hikitashi was given orders to pilot the newest Japanese fighter jet, the S-59 Celestial, to intercept and if necessary bring down the object. Hikitashi had already gained over 100 hours of flight with the Celestial before. He was confident it would catch this mysterious aircraft.
In less than 12 minutes the jet was prepped and had take-off with Hikitashi in the cockpit. The jet reached near mach speed in less than 60 second, but the object was going faster and faster keeping itself as a far distance from the Celestial.
“I don’t know what it is but it’s fast! Really fast!” Hikitashi spoke to ground control. “I’m going up to mach 2!”
“Careful Hikitashi, the jet can reach that speed but you will have limited turning ability. Make sure you’re lined up with it.” Ground control responded.
Hikitashi pulled the throttle and the Celestial reached mach 2, but it still wasn’t fast enough. Just as it seemed that Hikitashi could just make up the objects shape it disappeared, from sight and radar. It wasn’t until Hikitashi slowed the plane down that it appeared once again, this time it was flying to his right, but still away from him. Hikitashi turned to follow and immediately pulled the throttle again to go to mach 2, but the result was the same. The object disappeared whenever Hikitashi drew close to it.
“I don’t know what this thing is but it isn’t getting away from me”, he spoke through to Ground Control. They were having an even more difficult time keeping up with it as well. Only Hikitashi’s craft stayed on radar. Hikitashi was twisting and turning, soaring through clouds and over cities. The chase must have been going for over 3 hours. Finally Hikitashi made one last attempt to catch it. He line the plane up to the target, but this time he pulled the limiter pin. This would make the plane go up to mach 3. It was a dangerous gamble, as he had only gone into mach 3 once and nearly blacked out. The Celestial picked up speed faster than before. It hit mach 3 in a matter of seconds and finally Hikitashi could see the object… or partially. The object wasn’t a plane or a craft of any kind, but what looked like some sort of large flying animal, but there was something off about it, like it wasn’t all there. Hikitashi could have almost sworn he could see the skeletal structure of part of it and see completely through the rest. But as fast as he saw it the creature disappeared again, right in front of him like the wind.
“Hikitashi, Hikitashi did you see it? What was it?” Control asked. Hikitashi sat in his cockpit stiff and quiet. He couldn’t put the words he was looking for together.
“Control… I have no idea what I just saw, but I think I’d better head back to base! My fuel is low.”
Hikitashi turned his plane for the return trip, but then the blip reappeared on his radar screen, only this time it was behind him. “It… ITS FOLLOWING ME NOW!” Hikitashi pulled thethrottle and hit near mach speed, but the creature kept pace and was closing in. Not only that, but it kept jumping on his radar screen. Every turn Hikitashi made it appeared off on the same side, out of sight but closer than he wanted. It didn’t lose distance like he did in his pursuit. Hikitashi tried firing his guns and missiles in the creature general direction, even though they couldn’t lock on, but they all missed. Hikitashi made on last ditch effort to escape. He pulled the limiter pin and pulled the throttle to go to mach 3. He hit the speed in second and the creature seemed to lose distance. For a while he thought he was going to get away, but then the creature whooshed right past him. The plane was hit by the sonic boom and lost balance. He straightened it out but saw the creature had turned around and was heading straight for him. The moon glowed brightly and he could see it more clearly as it headed for him on what seemed like a collision course.
“My God, its headed straight for me. I can see it now. It’s… it’s…” Then silence
Both the creature and Hikitashi’s plane disappeared from radar. “Hikitashi. Hikitashi! Come in. HIKITASHI!!!” Screamed Ground Control.
The next day Hikitashi’s plane was found sunk in a lake, but there were no sights of him in the plane or having ejected. It was like he was spirited was right from inside his cockpit. The strange being still flies up high in the sky every night when the moon glows bright. The air grows cold, and wind whips past, and sometimes a faded shadow glides across the ground, but by the time you look up, there is nothing. Nothing but the chilling fear of the flying monstrous phantom that claims the night sky, that locals have called “Ghost Rodan”.
