The Fukushima area is once again hit by a massive earthquake, this one right of the shore of Japan. The resulting earthquake causes a large fissure to open up in the Fukushima area. The fissure sinks villages and farm area alike in almost a single moment. Hundreds die, thousands of people are injured or left without homes, but even ore stranger things are to come. In a single night heavy rain falls, quickly filling up an enclosed part of the fissure forming a large lagoon. To so many people it is an omen of misfortune, but to others it is a sight of luck. The latter would be wrong.

“Kiriko! Get away from there it dangerous.” Shouted Shin
“What, it’s just water! Don’t tell me that Old Man Shu’s monster story has you spooked now.” Replied Kiriko
Shin and Kiriko were two 16 tear old kids who were out at night to look around the lagoon that they lived in front of as part of a dare from the other neighboring kids. Recently a series of strange events had been going about the lagoon. People and even pets were reported missing, strange noises had been heard at night, and most recently one of the houses on the lagoon had sunk down into two nights ago. Everyone who was living on the lagoon had become scared of going out at night. But Kiriko had gloated that neither she nor Shin was afraid of anything. They were dared to stay outside around the lagoon until midnight. They were simply wandering around the lagoon to see if they could pass the time by catching toads or fireflies, but very quickly the fog started to roam in.
“OOOOooooohhhh! Scared Shin. The monster’s going to snatch you. OOOOooooooohhhhh!!!”
“CUT IT OUT you tomboy!” Yelled Shin
Shin wasn’t amused by Kiriko’s jokes, at least not tonight. It was bad enough that she dragged him along to prove she was brave, but it had to be on a cold, foggy, creepy night like this, but they had to stay out around the lagoon and risk their parents finding out. None of this was really fun to him at least. There weren’t even any toads croaking, or fireflies around. The only noise made was from the wisping of the wind. Shino was about to call it quits, but turned around to find Kiriko was gone.
- KIRIKO! Oh very funny. Come on out I’m not in the mood. KIRIKO! If you don’t come out I’m leaving you out here!” But there was no response.
Shin wasn’t much for being the bigger man for Kiriko’s sake, but his conscience wouldn’t let him go home knowing he left her out here. So he started looking for Kiriko in the wooded forest off the lagoon. An hour had passed but there was still no sign of Kiriko anywhere. Shin started to panic and wonder if some monster had taken Kiriko, when suddenly Shin felt an unsettling presence. He could place from where it was coming from, but it felt like something was watching him. He continued to turn around trying to keep a constant eye on his back so nothing could sneak up on him. He started to feel dizzy from doing it so much until he decided to stop. He listened closely for any noise. Nothing was moving away or towards him
“Nice, now I’m losing my sanity out here. I got to get home.” As soon as Shin turned around he was met face to face with a strange figure in the shadows. AAAHH!! Shin screamed.
There was a young girl standing only a few inches in front of him. She looked about his age, give or take a year or two. She didn’t flinch or make any movement at first. She only stared down at him while he laid on the ground. Shin didn’t recognize her from any of the other kids he knew from the village, not that he knew everyone that is, but there was something different about this girl. For one thing she had night close on, and not the kind you would even think to wear while going out into a mucky place like this, especially at night. Her hair and body also looked like they were really wet. Soaked even. But Shin wasn’t about to be rude to a stranger just because of her looks.
He… Hello. Shin spoke softly. Are um… you out here because of a bet too, Ha ha?!? Are you lost?
The girl didn’t speak. She just continued to stare at him.
Well, I’ve got to go and…
Find your friend? The girl said suddenly. “I can show you how to get to her.”
Shin was startled by her sudden response, and by the fact that she seemed to know why he was out here. Was she following him, or did she know him and Kiriko from the village.
“Come with me.” The girl suddenly grabbed Shin’s arm and was pulling him along with her. Shino noticed that the girls hand was as cold and wet as she looked. Shin tried to pull her back to slow her down at least, but it was like all his effort was in vain, like the girl felt nothing of his effort to slow her down, nor had any concern for it. Shin could tell they were headed straight back to the lagoon water, but he was in no mood to go along with this girl any further.
STOP! Shin yelled as yelled as he yanked his arm out of the girls grasps. It felt like he was pulling his arm of in doing it. The girl turned toward him slowly and frowned. “What’s wrong?” She asked calmly “Don’t you want to leave this place?” Shin was frightened now. He didn’t know who this girl was or what she was thinking, but he felt uneasy being around her. He though quickly for an excuse and blurted the first thing that came to his mind. “I can’t swim” he said. “I’ll just walk around and find her myself.” After saying this Shin started to walk swiftly away from the girl. He looked back only once to find that she had disappeared into the fog. She was gone… for now.
Shin kept walking for what felt like forever until he noticed something on the other side of the narrow part of the lagoon. It was Kiriko. She had gone into the water and was swimming toward him.
KIRIKO! WHAT ARE YOU DOING! Shin screamed trying to get her attention. She just waved at him and gestured for him to stay there. But Shin felt as ease again. Something wasn’t right. The air had grown colder than ever suddenly and the wind started to pick up. He looked around to see the trees and the water flowing with the wind and then something caught his eye. Something big. Some kind of wake was heading toward Kiriko, but beneath it was something even more frightening. It was some sort of large creature, nothing Shino had ever seen before. It was swimming slowly toward Kiriko, its great big yellow eyes trained on he, like a crocodile on its prey.
KIRIKOOOOO!!! GET OUT OF THE WATER NOOOOWW!!! Shin yelled and leaped and gesture to warn Kiriko of the creature, and lucky she saw it too. Kiriko started paddling faster and faster trying to reach the shore where Shin was, but her legs and arms grew tried quickly and it was like something was holding her back. “HURRY KIRIKO! IT’S COMING!” Shin screamed again. Something was wrong, Kiriko wasn’t an Olympic swimmer but she knew how to move fast in the water, but at the rate she was moving there was no way she was going to make it. Shin desperate to save her leaped into the water and started splashing around and yelling. “HERE. HEEERRREEE!! YOU DON’T WANT HER! I’M RIGHT HERE FOR YAH! The creature slowed down and turned its head toward Shin. It started to swim toward him now; its eyes were locked onto him with hunger. Shin looked toward where Kiriko was and saw that she had made it to shore. He was relieved. But his relief was flooded with terror as the creature was right in front of him and he had leaped into a part of the lagoon where the land was up on a steep incline. The creature suddenly raised its head out of the water. Shin could see it clearly now in the light of the now glowing moon. It was indeed a large creature with red fish-like scales and glowing yellow reptilian eyes. It had large fins on its back, antenna coming from his head and small black spots spread across its body. But what truly chilled his blood was the loud cackling roar the creature made. Like it was laughing at him as well as trying to scare him dead. The creature looked down on Shin as it revealed its razor sharp teeth, laced with its drool like a starving animal.
As the creature seemed prepared to lunge at Shin, he held his head up and closed his eyes, prepared for his final breath.
