MemberMothra LarvaeSep-23-2014 1:35 PMSo i was having a chat with a friend about the possible implications of what would happen immediately after the events of the first movie. With the sequel a decent distance away, we won't know for sure until about 4 years from now; so we fancied some speculation. How would the world react to finding out giant creatures exist, there was a government coverup, and 3 of said creatures just had a grudge match that caused mass damage to two major cities (and individually 2 of said creatures also caused large damage to 2 other cities) before one killed the others and left for the sea. How would the world see Godzilla? Obviously some people thought to give him some approval, judging from the applauding crowds in the stadium and the title "Savior of Our City?". But what about others? Would some blame him for the devastation and lobby for the military to hunt him down? How would the biological community react to a plasma spewing reptile that threw Square-Cube Law (in regards to animal size) out the window?
Then I remembered something odd when thinking of Godzilla's description. Some people would try and classify him as some animal group (a subject on some other threads here). While we can tell Godzilla is indeed a flesh and blood animal, I recalled the "A God" line. Then I got thinking of mythology and remembered I had read something matching Godzilla's description before. In the Book of Genesis found in the Jewish Tanakh and the Christian Old Testament, there is a story about God or an angel describing various animals found on the supposed Post-Flood world. One of which is a sea monster called Livyatan, or Leviathan in modern English.
Leviathan is described in Job 41:1-34 with lines like
[Keep in mind different translations may have different wording, but base implications should be fairly close]
"Any hope of subduing him is false; the mere sight of him is overpowering."
-Leviathan is basically unstoppable by human methods
"His body has rows of shields tightly sealed together."
"His chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone"
-Leviathan is covered in thick scales and is nigh-indestructable
"From his maw collect burning firebrands; sparks of fire shoot out."
-Leviathan can breath fire after some sort of charge up
"The sword that reaches him has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.
Iron he treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood." [Cropped similar lines for repetition]
-Human weapons are basically useless against him
"Nothing on earth is his equal—a creature without fear."
-Leviathan is an alpha level apex predator
Some other bits of info we get about Leviathan in other books describe 'fins' or 'spines' on its back and that it came come on land from time to time. It's unstoppable power is described so much Leviathan is treated almost like less of a normal animal and more of a force of nature. While the real-life description of leviathan might be a fantastical description of a large crocodile or whale, by sheer coincidence it does closely resemble Godzilla. Heck, considering the comic showed Godzilla had been alive and roaming for thousands of years, one possibility in the Legendary'verse is that he is the inspiration for Leviathan.
It be possible theologians or other religious figures of the Abrahamic faiths in the Legendary'verse might make a similar conclusion? This itself could have some implications.
If they conclude Godzilla and Leviathan are one and the same, some might see it as proof of their faith. After all leviathan is explicitly stated to be a flesh and blood animal, so there wouldn't be any perceived spiritual elements to him for more secular minds to disprove. This may result in religion getting a boost despite some groups effort's to give a scientific explanation.
Some may see it as proof of the end-times approaching, as whenever Leviathan shows up it usually is a sign of worse things to come. More so some Hebrew traditions speak about a climatic battle between Leviathan and a rival, terrestrial monster called Behemoth to occur and cause mass devastation before their messiah appears. Some Christian sources identify Leviathan as the sea dragon that appears in Revelation's Apocalypse, also implying the end is close. This might inflame calls for the creature's destruction.
I am not trying to talk about the good or the bad of faith here, this isn't the place for that. Nor am I trying to imply Toho based Gojira off Genesis. I'm just curious what you all think might be the implications of several groups seeing something rising up out of San Fransisco bay that they believe their holy book has been talking about for almost 1800 years or more.

MemberGiganSep-23-2014 1:55 PMHm.. Very interes- SOMEBODY GET THIS MAN TO LEGENDARY!!!
Still, this is a very odd coincidence. I remember seeing something like this, exept they compared the Leviathan to Zilla rather than Godzilla.

MemberMothra LarvaeSep-23-2014 2:27 PMYou just hit on my absolute favorite thing to talk about. There are similarities between the two, and there are more monsters in middle eastern religions. I strongly suggest researching Tiamat in and the chaos beasts. Yam, Ziz, Leviathon, Behemoth, and many others have originated there. There are also monsters in the New Testament, one of which is a multi-headed dragon in space...

MemberGiganSep-23-2014 2:40 PMYou forgot, "He looks down on all that are haughty; he is king over all that are proud."
Like the king of the monsters.
Good grief.

MemberMothra LarvaeSep-23-2014 3:03 PMThis is the kind of thinking that I think the film needed more of. It makes it hard to suspend disbelief when we're just told, "It's an ancient alpha predator from an age when the world was more radioactive".
Really?
Give us some freaking meat to work with here; grounding the presence of Kaiju in world religion and culture would make them an easier pill to swallow. I like that they made at least a token effort at that in the bonus feature videos.

MemberTitanosaurusSep-23-2014 3:14 PMI do hope they make religious themes somewhat represented. After all, beliefs are part of what drives people, and shaking those up really makes thing interesting. I understand it's a bit touchy, but as long as you don't go overboard unless you're supposed to, i think it's fine.

MemberMothra LarvaeSep-23-2014 5:25 PMHonestly, they could go over several different creature sightings and descriptions in history and make them major plot points. I don't see anything wrong with including different religious texts. They could simply be used to show the creature has surfaced on numerous occasions, whether you're religious or not. Truthfully, I don't care how touchy anything gets. That's what makes movies so uninteresting story wise, they're too afraid and play it safe.

MemberMothra LarvaeSep-24-2014 10:15 AMI have to say I find this post incredibly interesting and very well thought out. Religion isn't really my thing, but I can appreciate the concept of utilizing it for the purpose of creating tension among the human element in the movie. The faithful will always clash with those who live their lives without faith, and placing a monster like Godzilla right in the middle of that clash will make things all the more interesting and much, much more dangerous on the human side.
On another note, I have to wonder where Legendary will take the other monsters. If the concept of Leviathan vs. Behemoth is used, then there's only one monster of the three Toho monsters acquired by Legendary who would fit that description: everyone's favorite three headed dragon. I doubt very much they will care for the religious aspect since Godzilla pretty much defies religion in all its forms by his very existence, but it's still kind of fun to contemplate.
