Why, you might be wondering? After all they're both monster movies right? And set in the real world?
Yes, but the respective movie lore does not match and that eliminates any and all possibilities of a crossover from happening. Otherwise they'd have to change their respective lores to match and that would destroy the integrity of the original works.
Pacific Rim's lore states that the first ever Kaiju attacks came on August 10, 2013 when the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge was destroyed. That was the first Kaiju attack ever in the Pacific Rim lore, which eliminates any possibility of Godzilla existing in the mid 1940's-1954 when Castle Bravo was dropped and he was not seen again until the events of the 2014 Godzilla movie. Even if his existence was covered up, the fact is that the entire world coming together and pooling its resources to create Jaegers would have shared that information and known of his existence as well as prepared for it.
Automatically this single element eliminates any possibility of a Godzilla crossover.
But I'm not done. Why doesn't Godzilla's lore match? For one, the Kaiju of Pacific Rim were killed via nuclear weapons and last I checked the Big-G took Castle Bravo, a 15 Megaton nuke, to the face and lived. Also Godzilla's lore establishes that any and all Kaiju, be they living or dead, are/were creatures born on Earth. Godzilla himself comes from a time before the dinosaurs if you decide to believe the Godzilla: Awakening lore (which is considered by Max Borenstein to be official to the story) and states that he was around during the Permian Era and survived the Permian impact which wiped out most of life on Earth before the dinosaurs began evoloving over 250 million years ago.
I realize many of us love Pacific Rim and we all love Godzilla (why else would we be on a Godzilla website?), but the fact is that due to the mismatched lore there will never be a crossover between the two yet I still see people from time to time speaking as if it could happen. If Legendary does a crossover, it's not going to be between the actual movie lores. It would have to be a spin-off, and not an official part of either franchise's respective lore or timelines to work.
Sad, but it's the truth.

MemberBaragonAug-12-2014 8:24 PMNot sure why you made such a long post about why there wouldn't be a cross over. I think most people know there wouldn't be one they'd just like there to be because they think it would be a fun concept. There's a big difference between some one thinking something would be cool to do and some one thinking it would happen. For instance I want there Rodan to be a badass monster in the next movie that goes toe to toe with Godzilla like in Ghidorah the 3-headed monster and comes out in a draw. That doesn't mean I think it's going to really happen but it's fun to speculate and talk about if it really did.
I don't see why you see the need to break down what people want and why it wouldn't work. Didn't you do the same thing to people talking about old toho monsters being brought in to the legendary series and look how that worked out.

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-12-2014 9:49 PMI disagree; look at Freddy vs Jason or Aliens vs Predator, they haven't nothing to do with their respective individual movies, but nobody cares, all these crossovers are in an alternative universe, spin-offs, just a "What if...?"

MemberMothra LarvaeAug-13-2014 11:50 AMThe only true thing preventing the two continuities from co-existing is the fact that Trespasser attacked San Francisco one year before Godzilla and the M.U.T.O.s battled there and the event is not referenced at all. If they somehow manage to fix the chronology of this, they may be able to set the stage for a crossover. Just because the PR kaiju come from an alien dimension and Godzilla and the M.U.T.O.s are terrestrial doesn't mean anything. Godzilla could fight the PR kaiju in order to defend his home. The Precoursers and their monsters could play a similar roleto what the many invading alien races in the Godzilla series did. For all we know, there could have been anti-Godzilla weapons built by the military (*cough* *cough* Mechagodzilla) that just didn't see action yet, which covers the fact that Godzilla was not referenced in Pacific Rim. Heck, even the scale that measures the kaiju is called the Serizawa scale. Though this was just a passing reference to the original Godzilla, imagine if they eventually connect it to Ishiro Serizawa from Godzilla 2014. Granted, I don't neccessarily think a crossover will happen, but Gareth Edwards did say after he saw Pacific Rim that he was open to the idea, so it's not totally out of the question.
