MemberMothra LarvaeAug-09-2014 9:09 PMHi all,
Okay, today I am trying to talk to those who had a particular problem with the 2014 movie. It seems to me that one of the things I like most about the movie, is one of the biggest complaints that people have against it. That complaint is the lack of a Godzilla vs. military battle.
In my humble opinion, this was the lynchpin of the whole “Godzilla is a force of nature” allegory that they were going for, and gave Godzilla the feeling of something that was above us. Let me explain. I feel that the entire third act, from the Golden Gate Bridge to the time when the bomb goes off, the movie is very much about the military fighting the monsters. Not in a tanks on one side of a field duking it out with the Big Guy who is on the side, but in a more modern surgical strike military fighting Godzilla.
However, this lack of a straight up Godzilla going out of his way to fight the military is one thing that I love so much about the new movie. Why is this? Well it’s because that it stresses the point that the monsters don’t care. We as humans are so insignificant and meaningless to them, that they don’t feel the need to go out of there way even a little to hurt us. Godzilla didn’t go out of his way to break stuff, because why would he? We nuked him, and he shrugged it off, we can’t hurt him, he is in an entirely different level than us. For him to go out of his way to hurt/destroy humans would mean that he would have to care enough about us to actually do so. Godzilla going out of his way to destroy a building, would be like a person going out of their way to destroy a birds nest.
For me, it brings the whole Nature vs. Man theme to the forefront. Godzilla is like a tornado. He is just going to do what he is going to do. He isn’t going to go out of his way to break stuff, but if we happen to be in his way, well that’s just too bad for us. This was shown very clearly in the tidal-wave scene, and the overall destruction that he caused during his fights. He didn’t walk through the buildings because, well that’s kinda dumb. that would be like me walking through a bunch of thick brush in the woods when there is path right next to me.
So, I guess what i’m asking is for someone who had this complaint to clearly say why they did not like this aspect of the movie. I’m not trying to start an argument, I’m genuinely curious why this aspect of the movie did not appeal to you. Is it just because the Godzilla vs. Military fight is so iconic that you wanted to see it? Or is it more about wanting more action in the movie? A bit of both? I want to know.
TL:DR
Why do you not like the idea of Godzilla not fighting the military.

MemberBaragonAug-09-2014 10:17 PMPeople wanted godzilla to fight the military because that's what we were promised from the trailers and advertising associated with this movie.
We nuked him and he shrugged it off? Um no, since after nuking him he disappeared for almost 70 years indicating that he at least took some damage. The tank and bombardment at the bridge was also obviously effecting him by his recoil and the fact he ripped through the bridge to avoid further shots. People who like the fact that he doesn't fight the military always compare humans to ants, or some other insignificant creatures to him and I see that as a reason he doesn't go out of his way to attack them, however when being attacked that's a different matter entirely once he was shot at there's no reason especially judging by the fact he clearly felt the attacks for him to run away. Do I care that he didn't go out of his way to constantly fight the military? No, but I do care that when he was fired on he chose to run away rather than fight back at all.

Im not trying to start an argument but in my opinion, Godzilla wouldnt come to the surface for no reason. Even if he was awoken from his slumber, he wouldnt want to go the surface, he had everything he needed right by him. So my theory is that Godzilla Awakening is canon and Godzilla came up to the surface to kill the Shinomura. However it was killed during the blast, so although Godzilla disappeared, he probably did so because the Shinomura was dead and maybe he did take damage but I seriously doubt that.
Also, if you watch closely, a stray shot from a tank hits him in the gills forcing him to plough through the bridge unintentionally.
I agree with PeteDj06 with this

MemberTitanosaurusAug-10-2014 11:52 AMRun away? Felt pain? The only thing I saw even close to causing anything to him during that scene was that stray shell landing perfectly inside his left gill slits. Even then, it seemed more like a getting a bit of a bee sting then any real "pain". Plus, he was perfectly fine afterwards, breaking through the bridge more as a "hissy fit because of the sting" sort of deal, rather than "fleeing from the pain".
