MemberMothra LarvaeMay-27-2014 10:44 AMhonestly I think all the human characters were OK, and just like most say they could have been much better, I agree.
the best ones I thought were David Stratharn, Ken Watanabes, and Bryan Cranstons charachter to me they do have some interest in em,
Bryan gave the sense of Drama and scardness into it
David strathairns dialogue was fantastic in this film, sounded like he really is a general. hope to see him in the sequel
Ken Watanabe acting was great as well just wish they used him better, hope fully they will in the sequels.
but the rest were too average.
Hope fully in the sequels they would be improoved.

AdminGodzillaMay-27-2014 11:53 AMJoe Brody was the best. He had the most interesting backstory and continuance. He was killed off too early.
The worst was probably Elle Brody. Talk about trophy wife. She didn't do anything and was simply the point of return for Ford's journeyman character. Serizawa comes close. He was basically just a mouthpiece for Godzilla and the Mutos like so many of those wasted characters in the Heisei series-- except at least those characters were shown during the third act despite not doing anything. They also didn't have a consistantly dopey face throughout those films.

MemberBaragonMay-27-2014 1:15 PMhands down joe brody. Bryan cranston really knows how to grab an audience's attention and he was really great in this godzilla film. :)
the worst for me would have to be probably ford brody, aaron taylor johnson's character just had no emotion but he was however in the military and the military trains people to be almost emotionless especially on the battlefield. :)
Elle brody just a stay at home style character? No thank you but she did manage to show us at least some form of scaredness.

Worst I gotta say is Ford -_- his acting wasnt really bad, it just wasnt good enough to make me feel like he's even trying or making the reactions real enough. He was also a bit boring, if he wouldve performed better I guess then that wouldve been more nice.

and there wasnt characters that I disliked.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-27-2014 3:28 PMI'm right there with you KING_OF_ZOMBIES I really liked Ford. I think the idea was to show Ford as a tired and broken character who had to live with his father's break down after the death of his mother and is just trying to move on with his life thats proabaly what they might have been going for. I will say his acting his better in the first act of the film but wasn't as good during the rest of the film. That being said Joe was the best, shame he dieded so early.

AdminGodzillaMay-27-2014 4:09 PMI liked Ford-- He's an acceptable journeyman. He just wasn't as interesting or engaging as his father.
The rest of the characters suffer from Heisei-era syndrome: Too many characters with too little to do. It's the Kazuki Omori school of screenwriting where a bunch of characters are set up that add very little to the movie, particularly the third act.
Most of the Heisei characters only end up working through nuance and as exposition pieces. It's damning that the characters work in a similar fashion here. (Although I'd argue that characters like Dr. Ijuin from Godzilla vs. Destoroyah approximated an actual story character more so than the new Godzilla's Dr. Serizawa.)

I, too, was surprised that Joe Brody was killed off so quickly, but I read the article where Gareth explained why it happened and I think it made enough sense that it didn't bother me too much.
As for Ford, honestly, he's one of my favorites. He seemed like a tough soldier who was dealing with a lot. I repeat- he's a SOLDIER. Of course he wasn't going to show much emotion while he did what he did throughout most of the film. And in the first act, he showed enough emotion that I understood him. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but that's my opinion. Plus, he was a hero. He did the whole final mission pretty much by HIMSELF. And it was cool how he was protecting that kid in the airport scene. So as I said, he was one of my favorites.
While I can't fully say I understand what Elle's point in the movie was, I pretty much felt like everyone had their own place, so again, I didn't really dislike any of the characters.

MemberBaragonMay-27-2014 6:25 PMThe best was handsdown Joe Brody, honestly I don't see how someone could argue anyone else in the movie was done better than him.
Worst was Elle Brody simply because she never did anything. You see her every few scenes but nothing happens. She's shown to be a nurse but she's never really taking care of patients and I think literally about half her screen time is just her on the phone with Ford. If Ford was a single dad nothing in the movie would change as she didn't really effect it at all. For a movie that was supposed to be focused on human drama and a family aspect besides the father son relationship with Joe and Ford there was almost nothing with Ford's son and wife.
