Hard to say.  I don't think it will do poorly...but I mean, haven't even some of the Toho movies only grossed like $20-25M?  not sure what = success there.

Guess it doesn't look like it's doing great for a weekend #2 in the U.S. (the true barometer for an ultra-blockbuster usually).  We shall see...

Sad I personally really liked this movie and I thought it would do better then it has so far this weekend. I guess too many people got swayed away from the movie by the negative word of mouth from people who didn't like it. It's too bad that people pay more attention to negatives then positives in life. Like the old saying goes "Bad news travels fast" A pity there just were just as many positive opinions of the film too. I guess no one wanted to take those to heart.

Hmm, probably not.  Most people who want to see it have probably done so already. Believe it or not, even by second weekend, heavy numbers are usually lots of people--kids especially--seeing it for the second or third time.  Probably some of the depression is the release of Xmen, although that isn't doing great apparently...

My guess is, the movie is doing about what it deserved.  It is and will be successful, but it will suffer from not being great...but Edwards will have his chance, and probably a bigger budget next time to pull out all the stops and prove he can improve on it...he deserves that much.  I think it will still pull in over $500m total...

The reason for the drop off is that most people are hearing what the movie did.

Word of mouth is spreading. You can't make a modern blockbuster, about a monster, we all know, and tease that monster to know end. There was huge anticipation among a lot of people for this film, they finally thought they would be getting "Godzilla"

I mean, we have waited so long for godzilla that U would think they would have figured out that teasing might not be a very good thing.

The interest is there, as the first weekend shows, but the interest for paying to see movie that is teasing you is not going to work these days.

IMax costs. Seeing a movie costs. When people pay that money, they expect to be entertained. Not teased. gone are the days when we paid so little for a movie.

^X-Men not doing great? It hit $91 for the three day weekend, brought in the largest opening foreign gross of the year and is being touted as "Fox's biggest opener ever". To say X-Men isn't doing great, didn't hurt Godzilla and so forth is, simply put, a lie. Numbers for Saturday and Sunday were a little better, closer to the expected percentage fall. It'll probably be shy of $40 million by the end of the four day weekend. Considering a the original report was it would be shy of $50 million after the four day weekend, that's not bad.

As for Japan, foreign movies tend to do better in that country than domestic. The fact is Hollywood films are more plentiful and borderline make up for three quarters of the movies that are released there. The Japanese film industry is a fraction the size of Hollywood and tries to keep up with very rushed production schedules.

I'm not sure how Japan will respond to this Godzilla since tokustatsu is regulated to younger children these days and the daikaiju genre is borderline dead. Furthermore, I'm also not sure how much of that gross Legendary and WB will see. I seem to recall part of the deal being that Toho keeps the majority earnings in Japan.

As for the teasing rationale, thought InstinctiveGigan had a great explanation for why that's overblown (even with modern day 5-minute attention spans and overexposure to Michael Bay) and what the real problem of the movie is...

No doubt, X-Men ate into GZ week #2, hope those comments weren't on account of me...

@GMAN2887

Though the chances are slim, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Legendary re-edits Godzilla, in some small way, when the movie premiers in Japan later this summer.  We already know that the cut-a-ways were problematic for a good percentage of the audience, and even some extended scenes were edited poorly.  Who knows, a cut here or some tape there might make for a more attractive movie.

Let us know if you hear anything.

I think it will do okay in Japan, but the real money maker it's going to hit is China.

Came across this excerpt of the Weekend Report published today by Box Office Mojo:

The X-Men franchise is typically very front-loaded, though there's reason to believe that Days of Future Past might buck this trend. It's received strong reviews (91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and good word-of-mouth ("A" CinemaScore), and competition in the next few weeks isn't too bad. It should have no problem getting to $225 million, and could even come close to $250 million.

In second place, Godzilla plummeted 66 percent to $31.4 million. While that decline is a bit better than Cloverfield's 68 percent, it's still much worse than most comparable titles. Thanks to strong marketing, moviegoers rushed out last weekend; unfortunately, the movie they saw wasn't exactly what was advertised. Combine that weak word-of-mouth with tough competition from X-Men, and a steep drop was in order.

- It appears that audiences indeed did not take it lightly how Godzilla is being portrayed in this new movie. Earlier I wrote a lengthy piece about Godzilla being similar to Gamera in this film that didn't seem to go down well with many non-fans/fans who weren't expecting Godzilla to be this 'kind' to humans. The reasoning that Godzilla is oblivious to humans proved rather hard to accept. Others in the forum pointed out that it was likely the lack of expansion on certain scenes or human characters that could have made the movie a whole lot better.

I asked a number of friends including my mom what they thought of Godzilla 2014 and they are non-fans of the movie by the way. The major disappointment to them was that when they walked into the show, they were expecting to see Godzilla attack the humans and wreak havoc. Instead, what they got were MUTOs being the only baddies and Godzilla bringing balance to nature sounds like a ridiculous/meaningless plot. When asked if they would watch the movie again or recommend it to others, 3/4 of them said they would not.

Already X-Men is gaining momentum. In 4 days it has earned $111 million which is close to what took Godzilla 6 days to earn.

^You already posted this in another thread. Also X-Men had a four day, holiday weekend to this kind of damage. It was always going to make $100+ million in four days.
