Something I just remembered

Does anyone else remember the pictures of sinkholes on the mutoresearch.net viral marketing website? Because, now that I've seen the movie, I'm even more confused about what those have to do with the plot than I was all those months ago. At first, I thought the were holes left by the Mutos burrowing, but, in the film, the only time they are out and about before the main bulk of the plot is in the prologue in 1999, and in that, the male just burrows out of that cavern and goes straight to the Janjira power plant, then presumably stays there for the next 15 years. Does anyone have any idea of what the sinkholes have to do with anything?

Well since the MUTOs are descovered there it's safe to say that interconnecting sinkholes points to more places hibernating mutos or other monsters could be.

Oh, I see, so it's more hinting at elements of this film's 'verse in general rather than specifically the plot of this film.

Yes since that was supposed to be the actual site of the MUTO organization it makes sense it would focus on what they did before the film with some back story and maybe hints before the movie came out.

Most likely those were deleted scenes and they will most likely be seen in the dvd/blu ray release. There were several images in the film that were cut for some reason but were shown in trailers and tv spots. I'm hopeful that we'll get a pretty extensive director's cut of the film or some detailed featurettes explaining why certain choices were made when the home release comes out.
