second...if you are looking for a mindless transformers/pacific rim movie then you will be disappointed. I loved the buildup and the pace of the film. It worked for me. The mix of human and monster stories were well integrated and I was happy there were no Michael bay crazy camera angles and more money shots then I expected. I especially got the one shot I wanted and that godzillas eyes. It made him more alive to me. Seriously, not only do you feel for the human element, but you really care about the monsters themselves. A movie of nothing but kaiju fighting wouldn't have done it for me. (Pacific rim was such a disappointment for me)
third...yes, godzilla himself isn't in most of the movie but what the reviews don't say is that the mutos are. Just like classic godzilla movies, we already know about him but we need to focus and learn about his enemy and they do it so well. I heard someone say it's like cloverfield where you only get quick glances of our beloved godzilla and THATS NOST THE CASE AT ALL. what we do see of him is amazing...and get good panned out shots that made me want to cry In joy.
fourth....the movie is based on three human characters and I enjoyed every one of their story arches and with little informatiom I could understand thier inner workings of their hearts with little dialogue. Especially sherizowa. Every way that they showed this was perfect. Even when you want to see a battle (minor spoiler) and the battle is on tv, i felt closer to reality because let's face it... Unless you are where these events take place and within a quarter mile, you are watching on the news what's happening. I thought that gave it more realism.
fifth... Who would have thought to end the last 15 mins that way deserves a raise! My wildest fantasies couldn't compare to what transpired. I can't wait to watch it all again in 2d and 3d just so I can focus on different parts already knowing what's happening.
final....everything is perfect. If you complain about it taking so long to get to the action, then you watched it wrong. Go back to your mindless movies that have no substance and nothing more than a swirling pano shot of bs just to make you say "those special fx are amazing"... I felt these people...their worries...I felt these monsters and their being for life and that's what was well done. If I had one complaint it would be for more daytime shots of the monsters .... And that's weak complaint. The other thing I'll note is that most of the trailer shots weren't in the movie...directors cut? Throwing us off? Either way it's brilliant. If anyone gives this movie less than an 8.5 out of 10 then they didn't see the movie with a true heart and love for the genre, wanted a popcorn pacific rim sfx orgasm for two hours, or doesn't appreciate subtle cinema. I had goosebumps for an hour after the movie and actually cried a bit after it....why? Because I remember watching godzilla movies as a young kid with my brother, acting out scenes with him, and all the memories I share of growing up with him watching the movies on VHS over and over and I was unable to watch the movie with him and if I could've experienced it with him it would've been a 10 out of 10 for me but that's just personal. I loved how people clapped after the roar in the airport and after the first atomic breath. It made me feel welcome because not only was I needing out with my fellow godzilla fans that I didn't know, but it was achieving a lifetime fantasy of actually seeing what my brother and I had envisioned years ago. Call me biased, but our opinon on '98 would prove you wrong 9/10 fin
