I agree with Junkerde that we probably need a 'review' thread similar to the 'merchandising' thread.
Chris said he would turn on something similar to that on Scified on the 14th/15th, but it looks like we may need it earlier.
I've read over a dozen reviews so far, and sadly the consensus seems to be that the movie is just 'average'.
Most 'scored' reviews are in the 6-8 (out of 10) range. A few outliers peg it at 4/10 and 9.5/10.
They mostly seem to agree that for a movie that holds back on the monster action, it needed much stronger characters and dialogue. They don't criticize the actors or their performances. It just sounds like they were given scant material to work with from the writers.
It seems like the slow burner/little monster action would have been a GOOD thing if the human side is more developed, but it's not. So they either would have liked a stronger human side...OR more monster action to make up for the lack of depth. But to hold back on character AND action seemed like a bad combination.
Almost nobody is calling it a bad movie. But given the flaws/mistakes it seems to be coming across as average/slightly above average.
This seems to be the sense I'm getting from all the 'legitimate' websites I've read: Time, Variety, Forbes, the Hollywood Reporter.
More positive reviews seem to stem from either 'bought n' paid for' sites like IGN, or more fanboy sites like Shock Til You Drop and Badass Digest.
