Exclusive New Godzilla Review (Talkbacker.com)

The original is spoiler heavy, I stopped reading after the 2nd paragraph, here it is with no spoilers:

To put it simply, Godzilla is an awesome, satisfying blockbuster made by a “small” director with a great eye for detail, perspective and performance. The script comes up a bit short, tho. Too much convenience, and it feels like a little bit of the character nuance has been cut out, particularly for Ken Watanbe’s character. Probably because WB/Legendary wanted to save some shit for that tie-in comic. It’s probably cool, but gimme that shit in the movie. Fucking marketers!

But you know what, some of you guys might appreciate that approach in the age of the convoluted blockbuster. Fuck it, it really doesn’t bother me all that much now that I’ve dwelt on it. One viewer’s lack of detail is another’s lean approach to storytelling. Gareth Edwards’s visual style is so subtly sophisticated, and the cast is so talented, that JUST ENOUGH is conveyed to keep the story barreling along with appropriate emotion and gathering force. It reminds me of Spielberg’s War of the Worlds and Jurassic Park in how it moves, as a matter of fact.

Okay, enough about that shit. What about the monsters? What about the fights? The attacks? The destruction?

Fucking incredible, that’s what.

The bad guys (I use this term loosely because they’re just following their nature, even unexpectedly poignantly at times), called MUTOs for some acronym I don’t remember, are immense and scary. Think The Mist meets Cloverfield meets Edwards’ own Monsters. spoiler removed.

And, after mostly patient, teasing buildup, the shit goes down, and it’s fucking brutal and exhilarating. potential spoiler removed

Don’t let all those stories about Godzilla being “elusive” bother you, either. There’s plenty Godzilla action, plentyspoilers removed. The movie doesn’t blow its load early on, though, and it all pays off spectacularly. It’s rousing.

See this on a huge screen with a fat and nasty sound system. See it in a packed theater. See it expecting a blockbuster but REAL Godzilla movie. Just don’t expect Monsters Redux.
