MUTOs could severely hurt Godzilla box-office appeal

Godzilla vs (fill-in-the-blank) movies have never done well at the box office.  In truth, monster vs monster, of any kind, big or small, has never done well.  Most of the viewing public thinks those fights are silly.  The movies with the most appeal are monster vs man.  "Mody Dick", "Jaws", "King Kong", "Alien" "Frankenstein" and, of course, "Godzilla 1954" are all classics because they emphasizes the power of the monsters as compare to the frailties of man (and vice versa).  If Godzilla 2014 spends the vast majority of the movie emphasizing the battles bettween monster vs man, I think it will do $800 million to 1 billion, worldwide.  But if Godzilla spends too much time fighting MUTOs, the battles will become as uninspiring as the ridiculous battles in "Pacific Rim", thereby limiting its box-office grosses to about $500 million.  I have been a Godzilla fan since 1963, I want to see it break box-office records.  Personally, I hope Godzilla roasts the MUTOs on sight and then proceeds to terrorize the West Coast until man figures out a way to neutralize him.

Looks like you are gonna be very dissapointed. This movie is tracking great. The MUTO will be there throughout the entire film. If they we`rent, they would be pointless. Monster battles are in most Godzilla films, everyone else wanted it to happen.

Eh, that's just spewing self-fulfilling prophecy.

The movie is ALREADY tracking into the 500 mil ballpark. So when it gets that much you get to be 'right' and say 'i told you so'......even though Godzilla was NEVER poised to break 800 mil-1 bil, MUTO or otherwise.

Where did this $800 million number come from? It's like he just pulled it out of thin air. This movie was never going to make $800 million to $1 billion. Get over it. $500 million would be considered a wonderful success.

And the argument is flawed on too many levels to list so I'm not going to bother.

I don't know. From what I have read and heard from "somewhat Godzilla fans", they overall are glad it's not a stand-alone Godzilla film.

They're going out of their way to avoid selling this as a monster vs monster film.  A casual observer of the trailers might not have noticed any non-godzilla monsters are in the movie, aside from seeing the Muto head outside the monorail and a few other quick shots,  so perhaps the marketers share your worries.

I think you'll be disappointed with how long the Mutos stick around for, and I think Godzilla won't be hanging around after that either.
