MemberMothra LarvaeMar-02-2014 2:28 AMThanks, Gman. Now THIS is a good post. You really put a lot of work into this.

AdminGodzillaMar-02-2014 2:32 AMThanks, it's still a little cluttered, but I'm limited with the formating. I'll shape it up a little better as more special features and info become available.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-02-2014 3:16 AMWhat the hell is Sonys deal if double feature dvds and blue ray, why can't they use 1 movie on 1 disk like everyone else, is it too much money

mattman559
MemberMothra LarvaeMar-02-2014 4:11 AMi think the cover of King Kong Escapes is awesome lol. MechaKong looks incredibly...yeah

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-02-2014 9:42 AMI have still yet to understand why it is so difficult for an American distributor to get there hands on Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985?
It's a great movie!

Sony's attitude toward Godzilla releases has always been very fast and loose, which is evident in their past releases. They use "dubtitles" (translations from the english dub, instead of direct translations from the Japanese version) for subtitles and typically don't include special features.
In the 1990s they simply used the double feature DVDs to cash in on the hopeful success of their own movie. Problem is the Godzilla VHS/DVDs sold pretty well in the 1990s, but there was backlash from fans wanting widescreen/Japanese versions. They've changed their tune a little bit, but ultimately they still look at Godzilla movies as budget releases.
The nice thing about bluray, though, is that bluray discs can hold two Godzilla movies without hurting the picture quality. I just hope we get Japanese versions of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth, Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla and Godzilla vs. Destroyah, with full credits and proper subtitles.
I also hope Godzilla 2000, GMK and Godzilla x MechaGodzilla follow soon, as those are my three favorite Millennium movies...
@Jmac15
It's a rights issue that hasn't bee resolved yet. Toho's hands are tied and right now they can't sell Godzilla 1985/The Return of Godzilla until the rights issue has "expired". I don't know the specifics. More knowledgable people on the subject might. In any case, when Godzilla 1985/The Return of Godzilla does become available I'm sure there will be some distributors chomping at the bit to release it in North America. It's status as a cult classic is pretty high.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-02-2014 1:34 PManouther thing, why is GvsD double billed with Megagirus, wouldn't it make more sense to have G2000. hopefully their Hesei releases have better quality than their dvd releases, they better be the original japanese quality and upscaled/remastered

G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaMar-02-2014 1:42 PM@GodzillaFan1995
I have a theory on why vs. Destroyah is bundled with vs. Megaguirus. Sony put more effort and money into Godzilla 2000, so that's probably the only movie that will get a single bluray release. Sony is just trying to pull a little more money off of that title and they'll probably sell it for the same price as the double features to make an extra buck off of it.
Thus vs. Destroyah will get bundled with vs. Megaguirus and GMK will probably get bundled with against MechaGodzilla.
That's just a guess though. My hope is all three of those movies will include the Japanese versions with more accurate subtitles... Although I won't hold my breath for the subtitle bit...
It's very likely every one of Sony's releases will include Toho's High Def transfers.

godzillafan1995
MemberMothra LarvaeMar-02-2014 1:47 PMwell it's better if they use tohos dvds instead of making the quality crap like they did with GvsKG/M double feature

G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaMar-02-2014 1:57 PMYeah, that was a particularly awful DVD release. Both were cropped for full screen and implemented VHS quality. Sony's DVD for the SpaceGodzilla/Destroyah double feature was actually gorgeous though. It's just a shame they didn't include the Japanese audio.

godzillafan1995
MemberMothra LarvaeMar-02-2014 2:10 PMreally the only thing sony care when it comes to it's godzilla dvds is their 98 film, they could make money off the heisei and millenium dvds if they sold them internationally but no, they think that only america is interested in the toho godzilla, even though universal released GvsKK and BFI released Gojira, although the UK GvsKK has virtually no special features beside the movie. same with classic media, they could make money off their godzilla dvd rights if they sold them in places like europe, especially since they got the good movies and movies that were released in the uk theatrically, but no we can only have gojira gvskk and the only blu ray godzilla has to be 98, even though the Godzilla 2014 MAIN trailer and the events after have proved that godzilla is very popular outside of america and japan.

G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaMar-02-2014 2:23 PMI'm no home video rights guru by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think Sony or Classic Media are permitted to market their Godzilla licensed movies to countries outside North America. At least not without Toho's permission.
See Toho doesn't make any money off of the movies sold in other countries. They make money of off what the distributor payed them to get the rights to specific movies. If Sony tried selling the Godzilla movies they have in other countries (and they most likely don't have permission to do that) Toho wouldn't be reaping the profits. That's not their style.
Toho would rather a European distributor buy the rights from them directly so they can have another check to clear. And then that European distributor would make money off the individual discs they sell.
In short you could say it's Toho's fault... but on the other spectrum of things you could also blame distributors in Europe for not being interested enough to approach Toho for the rights to these movies.

godzillafan1995
MemberMothra LarvaeMar-02-2014 2:28 PMi didn't really know that so thank you for telling me, i just hope this new movie does something that could help uk fans instead of buying a region 1 dvd and then having to get a region free dvd/blu ray player for just those dvds.

AdminGodzillaMar-02-2014 5:44 PMUPDATE: A few things here. After going to war with the formating I've re-done the post to give each individual release their own information under their respective distributors. This is just less confusing for fans and it will be easier to edit when more information becomes available.
Next I've added a new edition of Peter Jackson's King Kong which will be released with most of the other Godzilla titles.
Finally, with my new mod abilities, I've stickied this post and made it the "Official" DVD and Bluray release thread. Enjoy folks.
@Godzillafan1995
I'm pretty sure all the Gamera Bluray discs are region free. There's a chance the Godzilla movies from Kraken Releasing will be region free as well since they operate in a similar fashion to Mill Creek. I'll keep you posted on that.

AdminGodzillaMar-03-2014 12:59 AMUPDATE #2: Godzilla vs. Megalon release date and Special Features added based on information from Media Blaster's facebook replies to fans.

G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaMar-03-2014 1:17 PMUPDATE #3: Npinkham brought it to my attention that a new re-release of Mothra has recently made it to the market along with three other Hollywood giant monster movies. It's available on a one disc DVD set from Mill Creek.
I also took off the "rumored" status for the Sony and Media Blasters titles. Media Blasters has confirmed Godzilla vs. Megalon and the Sony titles are available for pre-order on Amazon.com
Info has been added to the original post.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-03-2014 7:57 PMIs there any particular reason that Kraken Releasing only snagged the rights to Ebirah, Hedorah, and Gigan.....but not Son or MechaGodzilla? I find it rather odd that they wouldn't just get all five. Are we sure they aren't just sitting on the other two until they see how well the first three do? Or perhaps they haven't begun work on them yet and will simply release them closer to Godzilla '14's home video release?
I have to say that I'm not fond of the idea that the rights to both are just floating out there, particularly MechaGodzilla.

G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaMar-03-2014 10:04 PM@S.D. Bob
As of right now no one really knows for sure. It's very possible Kraken Releasing has the rights to them, but are saving them for a later date. There aren't many insider sources for Kraken Releasing since its a brand new division of another home video distributor. (Though which one escapes me at the moment.)
Personally, I think they might have Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla as we speak. But we won't know for sure until an announcement hits. Otherwise, if the rights are just in free-flow right now, anyone could pick them up.

AdminGodzillaMar-04-2014 4:18 PMUPDATE #4: Godzilla: The Series information, release date and cover art has been added to Mill Creek's list of releases.
Info from Sci-Fi Japan.

G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaMar-05-2014 11:20 PMUPDATE #5: It is with complete displeasure that I add GINO (Godzilla '98) will be re-released on Bluray this May. Additional details have been added under Sony's list of releases.
Info from Tweaktown.com.

godzillafan1995
MemberMothra LarvaeMar-06-2014 4:43 PMshould've expected sony to make a re-release of their movie, despite the fact they already have done a blu-ray version that isn't even out of print, they even released a 4k remastered version

G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaMar-06-2014 10:01 PMIt was inevitable, true. I imagine the new one will just be a re-packaged version of the first bluray release.

G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaMar-08-2014 12:36 AMUPDATE #6: Media Blasters has been updated with cover art, release dates and details for Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs. Megalon on bluray. A double feature DVD set of both movies has also been added.
Kraken Releasing has been updated with the finalized covers for Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster, Godzilla vs. Hedorah and Godzilla vs. Gigan.
Info from Sci-Fi Japan.

G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaMar-10-2014 2:25 PMUPDATE #7: Like I did with the other DVD/Bluray thread, I've added links for everyone to pre-order them from Amazon.com. I included the prices next to the links as well. I did this on my lunch break, so if there's some confused links let me know.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-11-2014 6:17 PMThanks for all the hard work, must have taken alot of time to compile all of this.
Question, Is Destroy All Monsters (DVD) also going to be released separately from the Godzilla stomp box? or will it only be available through that double feature?
Ethier way i'm greatful for these re-releases! I will be finishing up my collection soon. Three more movies to go! It appears I'll have to wait for Godzilla 1985 though (the black hole is strong with this one).

G. H. (Gman)
AdminGodzillaMar-11-2014 6:35 PMBanana Trama,
I actually just now read that both Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs. Megalon will be re-released on DVD the same date as their Bluray counterparts as well. So yes. There will be a single Destroy All Monsters DVD release.
