AdminSpaceGodzillaDec-12-2013 11:36 PMI know many of you, like myself weren't that fond of the 1998 Godzilla film, but for the sake of discussion I thought it would be interesting to compare the effectiveness of both the TriStar Godzilla and Legendary's Godzilla trailers. With regards to 1998's trailer, I tried to find one which closely matched the timeframe of G2014's.
So, after watching both below, (opinion of Zilla '98 ASIDE) which trailer do you think was more effective at teasing Godzilla and setting the right tone for the film? Again, try to base your opnions on the trailers alone - not what you thought of the final 1998 film:
Personally, I think the 2014 trailer did a better job of creating a dark, serious atmopshere, than the 1998 trailer did - even though the 2014 trailer actually shows more of Godzilla himself than the 1998 trailer did.
Both have their pro's and con's, and revealing Godzilla could be either in each case.
But I'm curious to know what you think! Give your honest, unbiased opinions (if you can, haha) below!
Predator: Badlands - coming November 7th, 2025
@Camdigidy "Emmerich wasn't trying to make a dark and serious movie, he was making a fun monster movie."
No, Cam, Emmerich wasn't trying at all, he hates Godzilla and he only did it for the money, he didn't care that he was disrespecting Godzilla.
D&E's G98 was just awful. I saw it in a $1 bargain matinee and could barely sit thru it. The new film can only be better - simply because we were at rock-bottom already "thanks" to Devlin and Emmerich.
What is funny is some of the critics of the 2014 trailer complain that too much of Godzilla was shown. As Kidwunder stated earlier, after the reputation butchery that was the 98 film, we needed to see more of him as a reassurance that it wouldn't be a repeat offense. We also don't see a whole lot of him. We see a few second birds eye view of him lumbering through a dimly lit area, then we see him rise out of rubble mostly obscured by dust and aforementioned rubble. You don't even see his whole body. The 98 trailer basically gives us a bunch of scenes of different parts of his body that we can puzzle-piece into almost the whole creature, so that argument is invalid. The other contention, that too much time was wasted on the halo jump scene, also struggles. In the 98 trailer alot of time is spent just looking at people on the street while cars shake, then we see a bunch of flash scenes that basically Cliffnote the entire film. The 2014 allows us to get emotionally invested by giving us more than a strobe of shoddy CGI. In short, the 98 trailer allows us to predict most of the movie, the 2014 trailer leaves us wondering what is happened in the other 2 hours or so they haven't shown us.
I would also like to state that we don't have any idea what is going on with the other monsters. We kind of know what the smaller spider guys look like, and we kind of know what the bigger centipede-ish guy looks like. But remember, we already saw the centipede guy dead, which means that there is very likely something much bigger and more dangerous that Godzilla still has to cope with, and we haven't the faintest idea what that creature will be. Mark my words, if it ends up being Mothra, people will be maimed (by me).
BTW, I use the same name here as I did in the news group Alt.Movies.Monster. There's a treasure trove of my posts (as well as those by a host of other G-fans) there detailing my dislike/disgust for the G-98 film, and the film's writers/producers. There were a lot of great posters back "in the day" there - especially a guy named "Steve Zivanic" who nicknamed G-98 as "Bombzilla" in reference to its box office performance. LOL.
The '98 trailer was full of cliche lines and "scare" tactics, such as giant claw marks in a boat that was hardly destroyed at all... And for a trailer from 1998, the graphics seemed very 80's. I had no idea who the characters were (Matt wasn't even featured!) and all it seemed to be was action (which, turns out, was taken from only about 3 scenes of the film).
The '14 trailer had an atmosphere, with a sense of dread. While there were far fewer clips than the '98 trailer, I was more emotionally invested. This only goes to show that quality proves greater than quantity.
The key difference here - the '98 trailer focused on the devastation. The '14 trailer focused on the characters experiencing the devastation.
Chalk and cheese, its hard to separate the 1998 trailer from the mess that was the final movie, but in isolation the trailer is effective, by not showing the creature they hoped to build interest - but as the film proved, it was a mystery that ended up being wholly misplaced.
The 2014 trailer seems to be trying to set a different tone almost by design, as if to distance itself from the 1998 movie. The slow build up and sparse soundtrack create a sense of dread. Is there too much Godzilla or not enough? I think they struck the right balance, the tease during the HALO sequence hopefully surpises those unware that it's the Godzilla trailer. The big reveal at the end is just enough to assure the fans that this time they're getting a proper Godzilla rather than some half-arsed "reinvention".
The 1998 trailer is better than final film derserved. The 2014 trailer is better than the whole 1998 film!

The '98 trailer conveyed one thing at the time for me, and still does after watching it; by teasing it's design too much they clearly showed that they had relied WAY too much on Zilla carrying the film, and basically had the rest shat out of a monster movie generator just to fill in the gaps. Very apt indeed that this film was later famously dubbed as "GINO", because if it hadn't bared the name of Godzilla, it would have been much more positively accepted as what it truly is; a fair-to-middle monster flick.
As for the '14 trailer...well without going into a major caps lock-fuelled nerdgasm, I feel it basically tells us "OK, so here's enough of Godzilla for you to see he's been designed right. But he's actually in a Godzilla film this time. And boy, do we have a treat for you!".
In short; Holy s**t I can't wait 'til May :) :) :)
Godzilla is a force of nature and the son of the Atomic bomb which is something to fear. I grew up watching every Godzilla movie out there, and never did I feel fearful of him because he was always there to save the day, even when he was considered bad. The 1998 Godzilla trailer was confusing to me at first because i noticed the quick snap shots of godzilla and I wasn't sure if it was godzilla or not. I also didn't see a lot of destruction which at the time assumed they were saving until the film came out. But I was very dissapointed and sad that it wasn't godzilla let alone killed him in the end, and he was small. As for Godzilla 2014, the tone was dark and realistic. it really showed the true nature of things of how it would be if Godzilla was real. Like I said before. I never was afraid of him, but after watching only the trailer, I now fear him. There is no stopping what can't be stopped, No killing what can't be killed. He is a walking plague, He is the bringer of death. He is the King of monsters and I hope he murderlizes everything in his path, and I hope they play his triumphant theme.
To everyone arguing about Godzilla, the 1998 version was crap, and it gave away too much in the trailer of what he would be doing for the entire film which was Stomp around and run away from everything. At least for the 2014 trailer, yes they sky dived a bit long, but at least it showed the destructive power Godzilla has, and how frightening it would be if he were to be around today. 98 version was all action, fish feeding, french secret service, chasing Zilla around and man eating baby velocizilla's. no realism to his destructive force, no heart to his character, and no respect for his image. Godzilla 2014 is by far a Master Piece.
The 2014 trailer hands down. The trailer for the 1998 Godzilla didn't reveal enough of what Godzilla looked like and, when I seen what he looked like, I was disappointed. The 2014 trailer reveals enough of what Godzilla looks like that, I'm pretty sure I won't be disappointed when I see him in the movie. When I watch the trailer for the 1998 version, I expect to see a Godzilla that looks like the one in this 2014 version or any one of the past Godzilla movies and, what we got didn't quite meet my expectations. So, I like that the 2014 trailer gave us a good sense of what Godzilla is going to look like. In the 1998 trailer, we got glimpses of a foot, a tooth, the spines on his back but, it never really showed his face or any type of full body shot. In this 2014 one, we see through the skydiver's goggles a pretty good full body view of Godzilla, albeit it is from a distance and amongst a dark smokey background. And, in the end of the trailer, the shot pans up most of his body up to his face which, although is somewhat obsured by debris, smoke, etc., we can use imagination to discern what it is he looks like. So, I don't think I'm going to be disappointed at all over the way he looks, as I was with the 1998 version.

Although we've seen the centipede-ish guy and the spider guy, we haven't seen them in any official capacity. In the official trailer, these guys aren't shown. And, I'm kind of up in the air on whether or not I'd be disappointed if Mothra is in this movie. I think, if done right, it might be pretty interesting. But, it's going to have to look very realistic. I would rather see maybe a Destroyah type monster or King Ghidorah or even Rodan but, I think Mothra would be okay if done correctly.
2112: "The 1998 trailer is better than final film derserved. The 2014 trailer is better than the whole 1998 film!"
And that, right there, pretty much says it all in a nutshell and, nuff said. What a perfect way to sum it up. LOL!

Actually, the original 1954 version never gave me a sense that he was there to save the day at all.
When i think G98 i think of the New Years Eve comercial for me that was the best caught me off guard thats when i realized The King arrives to the big screen. Rememeber seeing it when it came out may 28th i think...anyways....it took me ten years to realize what a KRAPY MOVIE Roland Emmerich had good intentions for making a Godzilla but he lacked the passion Gaerth Edwards has. I love the new trailer it looks flat out scray im okay if this movie gets a R rating as long as it does well and we get a SEQUAL. So cannot wait for the official First non teaser trailer
GO GO GOJIRA!!!!
I feel like this can be compaired to the: Slender vs Amnesia: The Dark Decent debait
Slender will give you jump scare after jump scare untill you get tired, much like how the 1998 trailer gives you Godzilla's Ellbow or foot or eye.
Amnesia will give you a long time for creepy-ness, tencing you up for a mayjor jump scare. similar to how the 2014 trailer builds sucpence until that one final awesome momenst of awesome-ness
I Believe In Harvey Dent
This is a side-by-side compareions of the two godzillas:
The Comparator - Godzilla 2014 vs Godzilla 1998
They are not even close. The new Godzilla wins in all respects.
