Official Pacific Rim Movie Plot When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse. What made Pacific Rim a good movie was that it attracted the imagination and the attraction of many minds all over the world. I don't know what is up with these pretentious American markets that would rather gloat on movies like Twilight or with their macho obsession with guns and war (James Bond?). But what Hollywood consistently gets wrong is that it forgets how big the market actually is for BIG movies. Big movies with very advanced CGA (remember the 90's Godzilla movie or Independence Day) always seem to pay well as long as you manage to give a half decent script in order. You'll get the masses rushing into 3D or giant screen theaters to enjoy these visual and audio effects. By adding very, very detailed elements in its production, especially in the soundtrack that provided that ominous feel/terror to the movie, or stunning visual effects detailing the massive size of the robots - Pacific Rim did deliver on screen, fun action. The beauty of beast fights, or any fights in general, is that it has the ability to go either way. We saw in the beginning how Gypsy took such a massive ego hit and almost got crushed by Knifehead. Likewise, the fight with Otachi in Hong Kong could've gotten either way. I thought he would definitely fall once Otachi grabbled him with his claws, tearing the flesh/metal from his backbone. But yet he triumped and survived. That's the type of "edge-of'your-seat" action that makes you guess how it goes. That's fine all in all, by all means it's important to put some "what if?" suspense in there. You don't want a movie where the Jaegers kill so efficiently that it leaves little doubt of their victory. But at the same time, the "punch" that the movie needed to really make fans jump from their seat wasn't there. For some bizarre reason, modern combat movies dislike this "hero kicking ass" scenario happening. Sure, bring in some Kaiju that cause a mess and provide a challenge for a Jaegar to survive. But at least put in some good fighting scenes of the robots where they prove extremely victorious. For example, in the beginning when they told the story of how well the Jaegers were winning, why not show some satisfying kill scenes. It would be also very nice if Gypsy 2.0 comes out with far more advanced improvements nand weaponry. Sure use a giant tanker ship, but why not use others? Use your imgination from the Godzilla movie series or from King of the Monsters by SNK (a video game I loved). Put in more scenes showing the massive size and destruction that Kaiju are capable of infliccting, add more robots that are borderline strong and take a beating. Then intorduce the new "Type 5" Jaeger and show some scenes where they really kick ass. Add another prototype of Jaegar that is propetiery - a lot like the YF 21 and YF 19 from the Robotech series. Speaking of which, the movie appeals to fans that follow such "mecha" type movies/games. Like Robotech, like Godzilla, Armored core series of games, and my all time favorite cartoon as a child "Al Rajol Hadidi"... kids love the idea of giant monsters (much more massive than the dinosaurs) and big technology (man) beating them. Introduce a new plot in Pacific Rim 2 where the world decides that their leaderships who have shut down their Jaegar programs are simply not doing enough. The masses uprorar against their status quo monsters start a debate on why the governments of the world are lead by incompotent leaderships. Have a story where the masses challenge the money/scarcity driven system and quickly aust these corrupt criminals from power. Instead they put into place renewable energy like no other, solar power (like Germany), wind/tidal/wave/geothermal eneergy. You name it, why stop at creating only a few jaegars every few years. It makes absoultely no sense from the scientific and rational point of view why it would still take 18 months to produce a Jaegar. I say 18 months specificially because that is what Pentecost tells Raleigh in the locker room when it came to the first series of Jaegars they "scrapped" together. With the advancements in technology why can't they produce much more advanced Jaegars now with far more advanced weaponry . And quicker too! Only a system where money rules the world (where billionaires lavish on their greed and governmetns have no money for some bizarre reason), no such positive future for Jaegars exist. Fast forward 10 years into the future where a much more massive Jeager production exists with a new socioeconomic system condusive to its production. That will get people excited, let's see the newest generation of robots with advanced weaponry defend our Earth. Take a step forward and send starships to other planets to harvest more advanced material and produce the "Mars/Titan type robots." There is just so much that can be done in terms of imagination. Change the battlefield to new planets kind of like how Starship Troopers took it - taking the fight to them. My gf hated the movie though simply because it wasn't up her alley. "All it was the same thing, new monster, new robot, new fight..." that's it. She would prefer movies of more plot and drama and heck even "tears." Butthat's not what Transformers or Pacific Rim should be about. It shoudl be about awe -inspiring action, big effects, great thundering music, and a sense of hero being built in all of us. Kind of like how Rocky comes back after taking a beating and whoops his opponents ass: scenes that invigorate and excite the audience on the protaganists strength victory is what's needed. Get the fight scenes right and the audience will be chearing at the end of it. Throw in a hero that takes out 4-5 of them one by one whereas others suffer (optimius prime for example). Add new alien races adding to the fight. Add a friendly alien race that introduced cyborg type robots (new technlogy). Take it further by suggesting a merger of alien/Jaegar technology. What about the bugs that crawl on the kaiju, alot like Cloverfield no? Why not show more scenes of mini Kaiju's (offspring) running around causing havoc, forcing a cyborg type robot (not as big as a full Jaegar) to come out and save the day. Remember the Invid series of Robotech where their motorcycles turn into mini mechas/suits they could fight in? Take it from me people, there is a huge market for the "mecha" versus monsters/veruss alien genre . Look at all the top grossing sci fi movies and you'll see. Add creative imagination, high level graphic and sound, interesting story and you've got a great movie right there. The human development of character development and making people really "like" the scenes and the people in them is the hardest challenge I think. The scene with Mako being attached by a Lobster Kaiju was great as an example, made us really care for the little one being saved by Pentecost's Jaegar in the nick of time. Look at the all the destruction that Jaegar did to the buildings, toppling them like no tomorrow. How about throwing ina Jaegar to the alien home world, where one of our Jaegars causes havoc and we feel a sense of justice as a species. There's so much that can be done. Hopefully these words don't land on deaf hears. Go Del Toro! By the way.. when is the new Robotech movie coming anyways? - an avid Sci-Fi fan.

Love the movie and the plot was great. Guillermo Del Toro is the man. I have two issues though, the initial fight between the Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha, Striker Eureka vs Leatherback and Otachi was too one-sided. Three Jaeger's vs two Kaiju and they all three got their butts kicked to put it bluntly. Otachi just happens to leave Leatherback alone to taunt Striker Eureka, and in comes in Gypsy Danger which just tears apart Leatherback with barely no problem and as most of you know they go on to take on Otachi as well, and eventually kick's Otachi's butt as well. Let's look at the big picture, one Jaeger kicks two Kaiju's butt's in one night and 2 Jaegers are completely decimated one out of commission sitting like a duck on a pond, it just doesn't make sense. In my opinion it would have served the plot better if one of the two Jaeger's that were decimated, were instead severely damaged but the crew escapes, like Cherno Alpha why couldn't they have escaped in their escape pods like Rowley and Mako did? Speaking of escape pods, in the final battel between Striker Eureka and Gypsy Danger vs Scunner, Raiju, and Slattern, why couldn't Chuck Hansen escape in one of the escape pods prior to the explosion? They didn't need both Chuck and Marshall Stacker Pentecost to press a button to detonate the payload. It would have been a better scene to have Marshall Pentecost ride off into the sunset and become a martyr for the cause. Chuck then could make a reappearance in Pacific Rim 2 alongside, either the Crimson Typhoon crew or Cherno Alpha crew as per my plot change in my earlier statement, and the Gypsy Danger Crew. Why oh why didn't Chuck and one or even both of the crews of Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon use their escape pods?
