Godzilla's a Plant: How do the G-Fans Feel?

With the reveal of Godzilla's origin in the new 2017 anime, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters many fans have become fairly disappointed in it. The gist is that in the new movie, Godzilla has originated from plant-life which is why he's all green and his spines resemble leaves.

Now, every new design grows on me at some point such as this one. You got G-Fans complaining about how he now looks like an old man, and that his origin is too silly for the king of the monsters.

I believe the whole Godzilla being a plant is symbolic for something. Remember that one saying? "Godzilla's a force of nature". Maybe Godzilla being a plant is in relation to that, that Godzilla has originated from a form of nature and is now destroying all in his path.

It is unknown what Godzilla's foe in this movie, the Servum have come from though but the wiki insists they are a sub-species of Godzilla. What are your thoughts on this new origin of Godzilla?

Im really not sure what to think yet. I think its very interesting where they are goin with this origin story. It does pose the question of why make a Godzilla movie that differs from his atomic age roots? It would be like having a batman movie where batman is a poor kid with parents. Kind of changes his arc. But Godzilla is not batman so I digress.

I am anxious to see this Godzilla movie to see what this new concept plant Goji goes. He obviously is immortal, and can change an entire planets eco-systems. That's pretty cool. Not top mention he is the size of a mountain! He is massive! Plus somehow generate new species that evolved from him. we have seen a glimpse like this in Shin. which leads me into my next opinion and feelings about the concept.

Shin Godzilla revolutionized the monster in both origin and character. In the Japanese movies he has always carried the message of anti-atomic exchange and power. Shin didn't really carry that. Godzilla wasn't brought upon from atomic weapons, just nuclear waste from mans ignorance. His 3 stages brought about a different idea of the beast, and the abilities he had! His tail shot out a beam? Crazy! And that ending? what the hell were those things!? Which leads me to believe that since the audience embraced this new Godzilla, why not explore other polarities?

I mean this Plant Godzilla has similar abilities that Shin did. The thin beam, the Servum coming from the Godzilla like the humanoid-goji things coming out of Shins tail, not to mention the record breaking size of Godzilla.

So my point to my rant is, I think we all took Shin's approach with open arms and loved it! So why not throw a plant form at us as well? Its time to awaken new concepts of Godzilla in order to keep him fresh and relevant. So Im comfortable with the idea and story of a plant based Godzilla. Its "GROWING" on me.

Also as for Godzilla looking like an old man,i think it fits the character. He is over 20,000 years old in this film. I don't know what fans want from the design after such a long time taking over the planet? He's not Dracula. He wont be looking sexy after all that time.

Honestly, I'm intrigued by this kind of unique approach to the character, more than anything.

This is keeping in the spirit of what makes Godzilla as a whole work: huge, destructive, nigh-invincible.

It could just be animation being a more open environment to experiment with to put out more outlandish ideas that wouldn't work as well in live-action settings. That, or Toho has been allowing those contracted to produce films under its watch more creative freedom in how they interpret the Godzilla character.

The thing is this whole, "Godzilla is a plant" stuff is unconfirmed to begin with. Yes he has plant-like traits to his design and his origin states that he "originated from plant life", but nothing suggests he's actually a plant himself. Even Biollante wasn't entirely a plant.

The Godzilla series is one where psuedo-science reigns and we don't yet know or understand how Godzilla originated from plant life in the new film. The original originated from sea-life, but he's not the ocean. There's specific chunks of story missing that we don't yet know about: How did Godzilla originate from plant life? What spurred it on? Was some kind of human mistake, ala, bomb tests, pollution, etc, to blame?

He may very well be a plant, but until that confirmation the fan base needs to quite jumping to every conclusion imaginable.

^haha! that's great!

still, lets say for the sake of the conversation and NOT FACT on the movie that Godzilla is a plant? The leave-like dorsal fins and veiny body make him look like he came from a plant.

What would cause something like Godzilla to be like that? I think he does get bigger throughout the film. In the beginning of the trailer, Godzilla doesn't seem to be much bigger than what looks like an "intergalactic air base" or airport. And in the new trailer when Godzilla appears when they return to earth they all seem very surprised by 1 or 2 things:

1) Maybe they are surprised that Godzilla is still alive after all this time and or (2) they are surprised by the sheer size of Godzilla.

I don't speak Japanese so I have no clue what they are saying or writing in the trailer other than Godzilla: Monster planet. But you could say hes growing like... a... WEED! *audience applauses, I bow,  curtain closes, exit stage left.

So I can only assume he is growing through out the film.

I never stated he was a plant, yes the title says that but only in the form of what a fan would say due to the youtube videos I've seen. I even state he originated FROM plant life in what I said.

Not a fan of it, kinda stole Biolantte's thunder for me..........for dumb reason that I'm not going to say.

Godzilla Generations was a beautiful game! I loved the fact that there's a laser cannon inside of Dr. Serizawa's eyepatch.

riggzamortis86

MemberTitanosaurusNov-06-2017 11:08 AM

^well now you got to say it now!

Biollantte is a great monster but doesn't have this kind of story line backing her up. There is a great possibility that Godzilla is not a walking plant.

im sure the movie will go into more detail and give an explanation about his origins

>He evolved from plant life

>Shares many characteristics with plants

>dorsal spines are literally leaves

>looks like he is made out of roots

And somehow you people keep saying he isn't a plant

The mental gymnastics this fandom does to justify whatever Toho does are some of the most blatant and outrageous I've ever seen from any fandom, especially after throwing a tantrum over gills and feet

TheGMan123

Plants don't have eyes, nor do they have vocal chords, nor do they respirate aerobically, nor do they have grey matter neural structures, etc.

Just because it's plant inspired doesn't mean it's truly a plant. Birds evolved from archosaurs like raptorial dinosaurs, yet we don't call birds reptiles even though we really should. Heck, crocodilians are more closely related to birds, genetically speaking, than they are to reptiles like lizards and snakes, whom themselves are from a different ancestral branch, yet they're still lumped in with those other reptiles.

There's a reason it's "plant origins" and not just "plant". That's because the creators are signifying that this is a newly evolved creature whose ancestral roots lie in traditional plant life.

MemberMothra LarvaeNov-06-2017 6:17 PM

By that logic Audrey 2 isn't a plant either

From a design perspective I cannot see any other possibility than a plant

Kong looks like an ape because he is an ape

Godzilla looks like a dinosaur because he is a dinosaur

Anguirus looks like a dinosaur because he is a dinosaur

Megalon looks like a beetle because he's a beetle

Ghidorah looks like a dragon because he's a dragon

AniGoji looks like a plant because he's a _____

Whatever, after the whole gills and feet fiasco it amazes me how much Toho can radically change Godzilla with the fans calling it the best thing ever every time

Relevance makes landfall. Thanks for the incentive to re-post the obvious:

"Ghidorah looks like a dragon because he's a dragon"

Ah, the line of thinking that could potentially deliver the most disastrous King Ghidorah yet. It's been a hot minute.

The look is definitely growing on me. I really wasn't sure at first, but honestly I'm ready to at least see something different attempted. It could be disastrous for all we know, but I'm glad to see the franchise taking real risks now.

I agree with you though. This is going to be a fun movie and the direction its going could be a great way to expand the Godzilla universe.

^^^^^^also Audrey 2 is an alien in the musical version of Little Shop Of Horrors. That's all based off of an old Roger Corman movie made shot in literally 3 days on a vacant lot. You cant compare Audrey 2 to anything that of Toho films. As much as I love his films, I can't compare Roger Corman to TOHO. And no one should. Roger Corman gave very little thought to "Audrey" in the original and was re-written for theater by very clever and talented play writers that knew how to make a musical out of a old sci-fi film. they are not scientists, they are artists. Art doesn't need to be based on fact.

so don't be bringing Roger Corman logic to a knife fight.

So, it is pretty much Biollante's story for this Godzilla: a plant evolves into a Godzilla-like organism. So all they did was take Biollante's origin story, change it up a bit, and gave it to Godzilla. Effective, but lazy.

riggzamortis86

MemberTitanosaurusNov-09-2017 8:25 PM

Biollante didnt evolve into Godzilla, she was a mutation from Godzilla cells. Not even close to this story.

Thanks for sharing GojiFan99. I was not tracking this at all. I saw a couple trailers and it looks like a Netflix release this month? Nice!

An origins story could be very interesting- I hope there will be English dubbing. How Godzilla came to be in part from a plant and the metal like muscle fibers G. H. (Gman) listed make sense to me and give a better explanation to his electromagnetic properties as well as explaining his sheer weight and why he can take so much punishment from our pea shooters. A couple things though:

Will this be canon? I am unsure of the canonical rules for Godzilla. I am unsure how the nuclear component would fit in (I don't understand Japanese from the trailers).

It is also fascinating to think about that there could be a similar biomechanical thing going on like how the Alien came to be from that franchise. This development on how those two things join up has been discussed/debated on the Alien Covenant forum since I can remember. It would be great to see if/how this movie handles that if there is any of that going on..

dk,
The movie is getting released in Japanese theaters next week. It will not hit Netflix worldwide until 2018.

Everything is canon in the Godzilla series, it just depends on what timeline it exists in. Including the 1998 disaster, the 2014 film and the upcoming Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, there are now 12 different timelines in the Godzilla film series. Some timelines only include one film, others up to 15. Planet of the Monsters will be the beginning of the 12th continuity. So yes, it's canon to its own timeline, but does not connect to the other 11 continuities.

Well, if godzilla is going to be a plant, all they need is a large amount of futuristic Roundup (weed killer) and plant Godzilla dies. The end.

Who else agrees with me that it feels like everybody forgot this fact when the movie came out on Netflix?
