My first discussion to you G-fans is, should we count the 1998 Godzilla film.

Some, I mean lots of you guys hate the film, and that it doesn't hold true to the franchse. ( can't spell)

Plus the movie is bad got to admit, but it's not bad as a stand alone kaiju movie. Because it's called Godzilla, it shits on the name and ruin many chances for a new G-movie here in the US. Until now.

Answer: yes or no and why.

Sort of. As horrifying as it is, the 1998 movie is part of Godzilla's history. The movie itself is decent (to a degree), but it would be better if it was renamed Zilla. This movie can be used as an example of how NOT to make a Godzilla movie in america. Still, it is part of Godzilla's past, it sucks, but it deserves some respect. Not a lot of respect (it's still a piece of sh*t), but just a little.

Yes it's a new version of Godzilla but because it strays too far it's hated. People are always quick to criticise is special effects and bad characters, but will look past all of these in most other versions if toho's name is behind it. Were the characters bad? To a degree yes, none were particularly likeably, but there's a vast amount of toho Godzilla movies I could say the same for. Can any1 honestly say the characters from Godzilla vs Megaguirus were well done? Of course not. How about the stars of Godzilla vs Hedorah? No? Yeah the list could go on really, but bad characters and questionable story is a part of so many Godzilla movies it's unfair to single the american one out. Sure it would have been nice to see the invulnerability, or atomic breath, but all of that was corrected in the series that spawned after the movie.

Yes, it should be counted. It is a Tohoverse (don't know if that's the right term) movie. I view it much like a do the stand-alone Rodan movie, or any other Toho movie that does not have Godzilla in it. It's a spin-off. Zilla is a Toho monster, and belongs with the rest of them. There were Godzilla movies that were worse than 98', and there are ones that are better. However, it needs to be concidered.

It's part of the history of Godzilla/Gojira, so it should be remembered. I consider it as a prototype for an American Godzilla. Good looks and CGI, story was enjoyable, but the military was a bit dumb and the creature not Godzilla. Thanks to the lessons learned from it, we have a new American Godzilla that captures the origings of Gojira yet have a new and cool look (some seem to be inspired from the 1998 Godzilla).

I'm sorry but what a dumb question.  It wasn't really that bad a movie, and if u really look at most other Godzilla films, THEY'RE HORRIBLE.  They just made him look cool here and there.  These days every 14 yr old kid with internet access is apparently, a great connoisseur of films, even though they tend to join in casting stones.  Godzilla '98's design was meant to be a big departure from the baggy fat suits we'd seen, and it was still an improvement in my opinion.  Yes the story could've been better, but i'll still count it.  That doesn't mean that this new one won't stomp it into the ground.  Think if this version had been done back then: it would be horrible.  If u ask me, everything worked out just fine.

I talked about this is another thread, so I'll try not to repeat myself too much here, but basically YES it should be counted.

I LIKED it as a Godzilla movie. Yes, it disappointed me in some areas, but it is still in my top 1/3 of Godzilla films.

Plot/Characters/Special Effects are all on par with what we've come to expect from the franchise, and even surpass it in several ways.

The departures from the character (durability, lack of atomic breath) while unfortunate, still fall within the realm of 'creative license' when re-interpreting Godzilla. Do I necessarily LIKE those changes to the character? No, of course not. But it's not severe enough to warrant cutting the film/character depiction from the franchise.

the 98 movie is cannon in the Godzilla universe, but it is not a Godzilla movie because the monster isnt Godzilla.

No ammount of insulting original Godzilla or 98 Godzilla will change the fact that it is part of the franchise-- just because someone doesn't like something... doesn't make it any less acknowledgable.

I do consider it apart of the franchise but then again, I don't. The 1998 film was a re-imagining. Not a sequal, not a piece to the story, no ties really. Just a re-imagining of the monster Toho created.

Nobody ever listens to what I say.

even in the film it was obvious it wasn't, plot wise it was named Godzilla from the scared fisherman when you really cant have another name for a giant reptilian sea attack. They only could name it what was closest to.

If you find a large reptilian creature your first impression is something similar (dinosaur or something similar)

yeah it may not be a dinosaur but that's what you'd think in the beginning.

so a scared Japenese fisherman clearly would think a large reptilian swimmer would be dubbed its closest relation.

plus it was mentioned in GMK so it is a valid godzilla film. I enjoy and still watch the movie. I know these points as my facts which allow me to watch and enjoy it.

zillahater I know its in your character and you joke about it, but honestly the movie was not terribad

Actually all he said was what a dumb question, he did not call you out like that, if I missed it please correct me. Welcome to the forums Mecha G. One thing to keep in mind is people like to voice their opinions here and debate, so don't explode when some people disagree with you. I'm a major G fan myself and so is pretty much everyone on this forum. Keep the discussions clean and everything will be good :)

Yes, it should be counted. Zilla appeared in final wars, thus making it canon. Also I like to think of zilla as a different kaiju opposed to gojira, because it doesn't capture the main look of godzilla. Maybe I am a bit nostalgic toward the movie, because I grew up watching it. All in all it's an entertaining popcorn movie. The original japanese movies however rule(for now).

Even Toho acknowledges it on an official level. But I find it amusing that they typically don't mention it in official channels if they don't have to.

I personally don't count it as part of the series. When I list Godzilla movies, take inventory of them or line them up in some sort of list I typically omit GINO. It has and always will be GINO for me.

The issue isn't what they took away from this creature to be Godzilla, the problem is that Roland Emmerich believed that simply blowing up a giant scaley animal and having him stomp through a city equals Godzilla. But that doesn't make much sense. By that logic the Rhedosaurus from The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and the Ymir from 20 Million Miles to Earth are also Godzilla. They're clearly not.

Maybe the monster would have been accepted had it been anything that remotely resembled Godzilla's past history. He's been a walking metaphor for atomaphobia. He's been a social issue for women to stand up against. He's worked as the antithesis of pollution. He's been a villain, a super hero and an anti-hero. He's stood up to mean all of these things with a looming nuclear answer that could drop at any time. Not one of those things came through in GINO.

In GINO he was just a scared animal. He didn't fight back. He didn't destroy a city based on psedo-mythical vengance. He didn't protect it either. There was no sense of dread or horror. There was no sense of urgency either. This isn't creative license. This is just a lack of creativity.

Supplement that with a boring cast (Jean Reno was the only interesting character in the film) and a complete lack of fun surrounding the possibilities of the creature and you've commited another sin which is arguably the worst one a Godzilla movie could commit: It was no fun.

There's no likable characters, there's no sense of real danger. It's all played off like a joke-- which would be fine if the audience were in on it and enjoying it just as much as Emmerich.

See, Emmerich, like a lot of people here I'm learning, didn't get it. The Godzilla series was unique and endured because it did stick out. Because there were no limits to its imagination. And despite how absurd they got, there was always a sense of urgency and care amongst the characters whom grappled with these creatures like it was the apocolypse. He had a long list of facets that could've been Godzilla and chose to ignore all of them to create one of the most bland, uninteresting giant creatures in cinema history. That's the movie's greatest accomplishment: It takes real talent (or none) to make a giant monster boring-- Godzilla or not.

@G-MAN

the cast wasn't terrible. I thought they were pretty damn good.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaFeb-27-2014 4:47 PM

The cast was mediocre at best. Matthew Brodrick is typically a good actor, but this movie torpedoed his career for a good decade until The Producers. It's not so much his acting that bites as it is his character. He's fairly uninteresting. This might have been the point, but he never breaks out of that mold. He never does anything truly heroic that changes his character for the better.

Maria Pitillo might have been up for a Worst Actress Razzie award that year. I can't remember. (EDIT: Just looked it up. My guess was right. She won worst actress of the year.) Even if she wasn't, she was downright awful. Her career has been forgetful at best since the movie. She's appeared several canceled TV series and as a guest actress in others. There's nothing redeeming about her.

Hank Azaria needs to stick to comedic roles and voice acting. Although he wasn't bad, he represents a part of the movie that contradicts itself: The fun that's failed by the supposed title creature. If the movie was as entertaining as he was attempting to be it might of worked. Otherwise he comes off as a mindnumbingly stupid and hard to watch.

Jean Reno is the only actor and character I can say nice things about. His character was no nonsense and combated the threat with a seriousness that echoed characters played by Akira Takarada, Akira Kubo, Akihito Hirata and Takashi Shimura. Even if the movie was just going to be fun, we needed more characters with the weight he carried into the situation.

The rest of the movie is scattered with mindless sub-characters, substandard acting and baffling roles. I'm not entirely sure how Hicks made it into the military and the Siskel and Ebert characters were a massive waste of space. If you're going to take jabs at critics, give the audience want they want to see out of it. Have a building fall on them or the monster crush them. Don't just do nothing with them.

the acting was good for the CGi around them. But I think the acting in the cartoon was better. Slitly.

No its not. Godzilla 1998 was its own monster movie because its not a real godzilla movie. Though it is in the godzilla universe its still not a GODZILLA movie.

Yes it does count in my opinion. Since it has the same name then it is counted as a Godzilla movie. They just wanted to bring Godzilla back with a new look.

The grim kaiju@ Wrongo, just because it bears the name that doesn't mean its an official GODZILLA movie its just a godzilla monster named zilla in his own movie. Besides in GMK they stated that the americans thought it was godzilla but the japanese had some doughts.
