For me I think its GMK, it had quite alot of deaths and injuries just like the original but a little more.

Yeah definitely GMK. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah and Destroyah and 1985 were also pretty serious in tone.

GMK's my favorite and my opinion agrees with you too, i love how that movie goes all mythical or should i say prophecy-like

Easily Godzilla 1984. The movie isn't concerned with anything remotely other-worldly like mysticsm, time travel, interstellar space monsters...etc... It's a politcal, cold-war, disaster film.

GMK is dark, but it's not super serious. It's flexible enough to have fun with the mythical aspects and the monster battles.

godzilla 84 for sure.  GMK is pretty serious too, with the whole "big g is the ghosts of everyone who died in the pacific theater", but at teh same time, there's guardian spirits and it does have some campy elements.

Vs The Thing. No camp, effects were good. Loved the way he rose up from the ground instead of the sea when he made his initial entrance.

Godzilla vs Hedorah.

People forget that Godzilla flying was a way of Banno self parodying the dark tone of the film. His form of film making was far more interestin got me than Jun Fukuda's and Ishiro Honda's. I liked how artsy it was, and the tone was serious. People forget how many lives are lost in Godzilla vs Hedorah, how we see the direct result of Hedorah's onslaught. Beyond that, I'd say its probably one of the darkest Godzilla films ever made.

He is 350ft Tall people, those things on his neck ARE gills, and the Brazil photo is part of the final advertising design-- Deal with it.

Godzilla vs Space Godzilla, I thought, was also a serious toned film.

@Akagi,

I don't agree that Godzilla vs. Hedorah was very serious, but I'll agree with fairly dark. But even then the wonky music, the enemy monster design, the way some things happen. I agree with the parodying with Godzilla's flight, but I think that's also evident in some other places: The fish heads, the cat surviving Hedorah's sludge, the cartoons...etc... I love the style of that film and I'm glad it was made, but I'm also happy we didn't get a whole slew of pretentious arthouse, hippy-zillas. That said I would've loved to have seen Banno's Godzilla vs. Hedorah 2 just for kicks-- though I feel most of that movie would've been stock footage.
